Early life and education
Sydel Curry was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States on October 20, 1994, into a prominent sports family.
While the male members of her family were all natural basketball players, her mother, Sonya Curry, had experience playing competitive sports. Her influence on Sydel Curry’s decision to switch from basketball to volleyball at such a young age may have been due to her being a former volleyball player at Virginia Tech. She started out by enrolling in her mother’s Montessori school. She moved to Toronto with her father when she was 7 because he had joined the Toronto Raptors (where he played his final three NBA seasons).
Her father, Dell Curry, is a famous former American professional basketball player. She has two older brothers: Seth Curry and Stephen Curry, who are also athletes.
Sydel Curry began her elementary school education at Queensway Christian College in Etobicoke, Ontario, but her stay in Canada was brief—just one year. Her family returned to North Carolina after Dell Curry finished his time with the Toronto Raptors in 2002.
Despite spending so much time in the spotlight, Sydel Curry says that being raised in a close-knit, devout Christian family has helped her stay grounded. She remembers her early years as being super normal, and she doesn’t think much has changed. Perhaps that’s why, despite having the potential to pursue a successful volleyball career, she continued to major in psychology (and minor in human services studies) at Elon like any other student.
She has been dating Ricky Brown, a football player at Elon University, for quite some time. Sydel Curry enjoys spending time with her family and friends, especially Riley Elizabeth Curry, whom she considers her spirit animal when she is not busy being a famous volleyball player.
Riley’s mother Elizabeth Curry, Sydel Curry’s sister-in-law, is no stranger to the spotlight either. Ayesha Curry is a former actress, now a proud mother of two and a future master chef. She is happily married to Stephen Curry.
The Curry family is essentially the model for the ideal American family, so it’s no surprise that Sydel Curry’s bio on every social media platform simply says, “Family is everything to me.” But she has established her identity as a talented athlete and independent young woman even as she proudly carries on her family legacy and maintains close ties with her loved ones. According to her Elon coach, Sydel Curry prefers to be called by her first name simply because she is a confident, talented woman who wants to be known for who she is rather than who she comes from.
Career
The talented youngster returned from Canada, where Sydel Curry spent a lot of time, and followed in her brother’s footsteps by enrolling at Charlotte Christian School, located in North Carolina. It was here that she developed a love for volleyball and became famous.
Like her mother, she started high school balancing basketball and volleyball while still being successful at both. It was only a matter of time before the inevitable choice of what to keep and what to drop. Sydel Curry had to decide because the club volleyball and basketball seasons fell at the same time. After much thought, she chose volleyball because it was her greatest passion.
She was a standout volleyball player in high school, inspiring her team to new heights as a starter and winning numerous awards along the way. She served as team captain for three of her four years as a member of Charlotte Christian. She played a key role in the winning streak that helped CCS surpass the record for most wins in a season in 2012.
Sydel Curry has received numerous NCISAA honors (four-time CISAA all-conference team selection and two-time NCISAA all-state team selection), in addition to playing for Carolina Union in 2012 and participating in the national championship.
Personal life
NBA players Stephen Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, and Seth Curry, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, are both her brothers. Sydel Curry married NBA star Damion Lee in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 1, 2018.
The couple’s first son, Daxon Wardell-Xavier Lee, was born in 2021. Sydel Curry suffered several miscarriages before giving birth to her son.
Net worth
Sydel Curry makes her living playing professional volleyball. She is estimated to be worth between $500,000 and $1 million.
