Early life and education

Stephen William Hansen was born on May 7, 1959 in Mosgiel, New Zealand. He was raised by his parents, Desmond Hansen and Lauriss Hansen, dairy farmers on the Taieri Plain. The media does not know the names of any siblings he has.

Hansen was educated at Outram Primary School, Taieri High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School. He also attended Taieri College in Mosgiel, New Zealand.

Career

Steve Hansen began his coaching career with the Canterbury Provincial Rugby team in New Zealand, leading them to victory in the National Provincial Championships in 1997 and 2001. He also served as assistant coach for Super Rugby team Canterbury Crusaders from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, Hansen became head coach of the Wales national team, although his tenure there had mixed results.

In 2004, Hansen joined the coaching staff of the New Zealand All Blacks under Graham Henry. He then took over as head coach of the All Blacks in 2012, leading them to victory at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
