Sunday’s Golden Globes will kick off Hollywood’s awards festivities

BEVERLY HILLS (REUTERS): Hollywood will kick off its 2025 awards show on Sunday at the annual Golden Globes, where films such as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez” vie for honors and recognition. pay attention before the Oscars.

Timothee Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Angelina Jolie are among the stars in the running for acting honors at the first-ever red carpet ceremony hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser. The show will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ PARA.O.

Past Globes shows have been more relaxed than the Oscars, which award the film industry’s highest honors in March. Nominees from both film and television sipped cocktails and champagne during the Golden Globes while hosts like Ricky Gervais delivered searing jokes about the A-list crowd and Golden Globes voters.

Glaser, a stand-up comedian best known for skewering football legend Tom Brady during a set on Netflix NFLX.O, said she set some boundaries for herself this year.

“There were definitely jokes that I wanted to make that I had to cut because I was too critical or too cynical,” Glaser said in an interview with Reuters.

“This is not baking,” she added. “This is a night to celebrate everything, so I want to create a fun atmosphere and I want the nominees to feel proud of themselves. I don’t want them to feel attacked.”

The show’s hosting lineup features big-name celebrities including Dwayne Johnson, Elton John, Andrew Garfield and Awkwafina.

As for awards, the Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez” and the post-World War II epic “The Brutalist” lead the night’s film nominations.

“The Brutalist” stars Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who flees to the United States to pursue the American dream. The three-and-a-half-hour story is considered a front-runner for the awards night’s top prize, best drama.

Competitors include “Conclave” about the selection of a pope and two films starring Chalamet – the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” and the sci-fi epic “Dune – Part II”.

Unlike the Oscars, musicals and comedies compete in a separate category at the Golden Globes. Nominations in that field include the box office hit “Wicked” and the dark romantic comedy “Anora.”

Winning the Globes could help the films up for the Oscars in March. “If a film or actor takes home the award,” said Scott Feinberg, awards executive editor at The Hollywood Reporter, Globe, “that would increase the likelihood that members of the motion picture academy would see that project.”

Feinberg predicts that The Brutalist or Conclave will win the drama award at the Globes. The music or comedy categories are more difficult to judge because the nominees are so different, he said.

“Emilia Perez,” a musical thriller, tells the story of a Mexican drug lord who transitions from male to female. “Wicked,” a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” was adapted from a popular Broadway play.

“Anora,” about a prostitute who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, is more of a traditional comedy while “The Substance” stars Demi Moore as a celebrity is looking for the fountain of youth, essentially a horror movie, Feinberg said.

“That (category) is everywhere,” Feinberg said.

The Golden Globe winner is chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, compared with about 9,000 voters who choose the Academy Awards. The Globes’ voting body has expanded in recent years and organizers have instituted reforms after being criticized for ethical lapses and a lack of diversity.
