SuperM, the famous K-pop supergroup, was formed in 2019 through a collaboration between SM Entertainment And Capital music group.

The group consists of seven members who were originally part of four separate groups SM Entertainment boy band: Taemin from SHINee, Baek Hyun and Kai from Exo, Taeyong and Mark Lee from NCT 127, Ten from WayV and Lucas Wong, former member of both NCT and WayV.

SuperM is a boy band consisting of members formerly of prominent boy bands under the management of SM Entertainment. Taemin entered the entertainment industry when he was 14 years old, debuting as a member of Shinee in May 2008. Meanwhile, BaekHyun and Kai debuted as members of Exo in April 2012, specifically in Exo-K, the Korean subgroup. Furthermore, BaekHyun demonstrated his talent in Exo’s R&B-oriented subgroup, Exo-CBX, starting in October 2016.

NCT members Taeyong, Ten and Mark debuted in April 2016, Taeyong and Mark joined NCT 127, a Seoul-based subgroup, in July 2016. Mark also joined NCT Dream, a teenage subgroup in August 2016. In contrast, Ten and Lucas joined WayV, NCT’s China-based subgroup, in January 2019.

Before SuperM officially debuted in 2019, there were rumors about SM Entertainmentintention to form a “K-pop super boy group”. Finally, on August 7, 2019, the group was officially introduced as SuperM at Capitol Congress 2019 by Capital music group President Steve Barnett and SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man.

Career

SuperM, the brainchild of SM Entertainment in 2019, they are considered a formidable K-pop supergroup consisting of seven members from various illustrious K-pop groups. Its lineup features Taemin from SHINee, BaekHyun and Kai from EXO, Taeyong and Mark from NCT 127, Lucas and Ten from WayV. The main goal behind the founding of SuperM was to lead the promotion of K-pop on a global scale, focusing on penetrating the American market.

Debuted on October 4, 2019 with the mini album “super M” and the lead single Jogging, SuperM achieved a groundbreaking milestone by taking the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart, a first for any K-pop group. Following this victory, they embarked on their first world tour, SuperM – First world tourin November 2019.

In September 2020, the release of their highly anticipated second mini-album, super onetaking them to number two on the prestigious Billboard 200 chart, solidifying their position as the best-selling K-pop album in the United States in 2020. Capitalizing on this success, they released their debut full-length album, Super One – First albumjust one month later, in October 2020.

However, SuperM, which brings together talent from different K-pop groups, has faced challenges from schedule conflicts between its members’ main branches. As a result, in 2021, the group paused releasing new music and arranged only a limited number of online concerts. Furthermore, the group suffered another setback in 2022 when member Lucas took a hiatus due to personal controversies, leading to speculation about the group’s future as well as its ability to maintain cohesion and group dynamics.
