Suspiria (2018)

Suspiria is a 2018 supernatural horror film directed by Luca Guadagnino and inspired by Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian film of the same name. The story revolves around an American woman, played by Dakota Johnson, who joins a prestigious dance academy in Berlin, unaware that it is run by a group of witches. Tilda Swinton plays three roles in the film: the chief choreographer, a male psychotherapist with ties to the academy, and the leader of a coven.

Mia Goss, Elena Falkina and Chloë Grace Moretz also star in the film in supporting roles as academy students. The project to remake Suspiria began in 2008, when Guadagnino acquired the rights from the original film’s creators, Argento and Daria Nicolodi. However, the project ran into financing conflicts when it was initially offered to David Gordon Green, and was cancelled.

In 2015, Guadagnino confirmed that he planned to pay homage to the original rather than a straight remake. The script, written by David Kajganich, is set in the “German Autumn” of 1977 and explores intergenerational guilt as well as themes of motherhood, evil and matriarchy in Cold War-era Germany.

In stark contrast to the exaggerated colors of the original, Guadagnino envisioned Suspiria’s visuals to be “winter-y” and devoid of primary colors. The film incorporates stylized dance sequences choreographed by Damian Jarrett that contribute to the depiction of witchcraft.

The film was shot in late 2016 and early 2017 in Varese and Berlin, Italy. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and was inspired by krautrock. The film is dedicated to the memory of Franka Sozzani, Jonathan Demme and Deborah Falzoni.

“Suspiria” premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on September 1, 2018. After a limited release in Los Angeles and New York on October 26, 2018, it grossed over $180,000 in its opening weekend, setting a record for the highest screen average of the year for its launch. The film was subsequently released widely on November 2, 2018, and was released in Italy on January 1, 2019.

She found Patricia and other tortured girls in a deteriorating condition in the caves below. While trying to escape, Sarah’s leg was broken, but miraculously it healed, allowing her to return to Walker’s performance studio. Haunted by the fate of his missing wife and his own ties to the academy, Joseph is unwittingly drawn into a larger conspiracy.

The instructors believe he is the missing link in their ritual and manipulate him into returning to the academy, where he becomes an unwitting participant in their evil plan. Suzy realizes that the time has come for the ceremony to begin and ventures deeper into the building.

She found herself in a room filled with naked dancers performing a ritual dance. Another group of people gathered around Patricia, Olga and Sarah, who were under a spell, suffering but still alive. Blanc and Withered Marcos are present, along with a naked Dr. Joseph, ready to testify.

At a crucial moment, Blanc surprises everyone by expressing a newfound intimacy to Suzy. She suggests that Suzy should leave and not attend the ceremony, knowing that Suzy’s life will be sacrificed to protect Marcos. However, Marcos becomes increasingly impatient with Blanc’s hesitation and uses her powers to attack her, prompting the arrival of one of the Three Mothers, further exacerbating the tense situation.

Dark Wind Conspiracy

In the German autumn of 1977, Susie Bannion, an American from a Mennonite family in Ohio, enrolled in the Marcos Dance Academy in West Berlin. The college is disturbed by the disappearance of student Patricia Singer, who claims the college is run by a group of witches.

Patricia’s psychotherapist, Josef Klemperer, discovers Patricia’s diary, which details the existence of three mothers, ancient pre-Christian witches: Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum and Mater Lachrymarum. Klemperer was initially skeptical but became suspicious after Patricia disappeared.

During a rehearsal, a Soviet student named Olga challenged the chief choreographer Mrs. Blanc and later found herself trapped in a room with a mirror. Suzy’s aggressive dancing during rehearsals took a toll on Olga’s body, leading to her horrific fate. The female deans of the college elect the disfigured witch Sister Marcos as their new leader, but one of the deans commits suicide.

Susie grows closer to her classmate Sarah and wins Blanc’s favor, landing the lead role in the upcoming show “Walker.” Meanwhile, Sara investigates the housewives and discovers hidden passages containing esoteric artifacts. During the public performance of “Walker,” Sarah appeared with a discolored eye despite a broken leg.

After the show, Klemperer meets a woman who resembles his presumed late wife, only to realize that he was lured to the academy for a sinister purpose. Susie attends a dinner party with the ladies and later confronts them, revealing that she is Mother Wind. She gave up her mother, who died in Ohio. Suzy initiated the Witches’ Sabbath, killing Marcos’ mother and her loyal followers. Patricia, Olga and Sara were sentenced to death for having suffered greatly.

The college resumed as usual, and a few female deans survived. Klemperer survived the Sabbath and met Susie, who erased his memory after recounting the fate of his wife Anke. The film ends with Suzy looking out approvingly from the academy.
