Early Life & Education
SUGAthakumari was born on January 22, 1934 in Aranmula, present-day southern Indian state of Kerala. At the time of its birth, Kerala was part of the Kingdom of Travancore.
SUGathakumari comes from a family with a strong intellectual background and dedication to social activities. Her father, Keshava Pillai, also known as Bodheswaran, was a famous Gandhian thinker and writer, actively involved in the country’s freedom struggle. Her mother, VK Karthiyayini Amma, was a respected Sanskrit scholar and teacher.
Among her siblings, SUGAthakumari is the second of three daughters. She has an older sister named Hrdayakumari and a younger sister named Sujatha Devi. Both achieved considerable success in the literary field.
SUGAthakumari pursued her higher education at University College, Thiruvananthapuram. She graduated there and completed her master’s degree in philosophy from the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, in 1955.
During his studies, Suthakumari undertook three years of research on ‘Comparative study of the concept of Moksha in Indian philosophical schools.‘ However, she did not complete her thesis.

Dr. K. Velayudhan Nair, SUGAthakumari’s husband, was a writer and educational psychologist who passed away in 2003.
Lakshmi Devi, their daughter, was born. Hridayakumari, the eldest sister of SUGAthakumari, was a literary critic, orator and education advocate.
B. Sujatha Devi, her younger sister, is also a writer. On her 84th birthday, the Keralan government designated SUGAthakumari’s ancestral house, Vazhuvelil Tharavadu, as a protected monument.
