Sex, Lies and College Cults A documentary from Peacock begins as Larry Ray moves into his daughter Talia’s dormitory, a sophomore at Sarah Lawrence College, in September 2010. He has just been released from prison and needs to stay, and Talia’s friends seem “barely fazed.”

Then his time at the liberal arts college of Yonkers, New York, took a dark turn. While Larry hosted movie nights and bought expensive takeout for students, the dormitory arrangements seemed fine for a while. But it gradually became a very dark tale of human trafficking, sexual grooming, horrific forms of corporal punishment and threats. He became a cult leader, exploiter, extortionist and sex trafficker.

Growing up in New Jersey, Talia was very close to her father, Larry Ray. She took his word as law. It was her way of life, and it was clear when she said, “their house had poison in the walls or in the attic.” But she was an impressionable child when she heard her father say that in second grade.

Then, amid her parents’ acrimonious divorce in the 2000s, the 15-year-old told authorities that her mother had physically and sexually abused her, allegedly at her father’s direction. As if that weren’t enough, Talia’s mother flatly refused to grant her formal custody of Talia and her then-4-year-old sister Ava after the court formally declared her innocent.

Instead, she decided to live in one of the area’s youth shelters to ensure she could always support her father no matter what life threw at her. However, this decision meant she was cut off from her siblings.

However, Talia continued to speak in her father’s favor, so she allowed him to move into her Sarah Lawrence apartment in 2010, where he then began abusing her friends and roommates.

An investigation was conducted and concluded that Teresa was not a child abuser and that Ray had manipulated Talia into making these false accusations. Talia described her father to friends as a “truth teller.” She said her father was unjustly imprisoned after he tried to rescue her younger sister, Ava, from her mother’s abuse and revealed that she had been abused by her mother. Child welfare officials later determined that the child abuse allegations against Larry Ray’s ex-wife, Teresa, were unfounded.

Talia defended her father, saying he was imprisoned by corrupt officials who tried to bring him down for exposing government corruption. One of those officials was former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik.

Former roommate Claudia Drury wrote of what Ray told her, “Politicians who wanted Kerik in office worked with Teresa (Ray) to try to harm Talia and Ava to get Larry to stop exposing their corruption. In nine months, Larry was arrested 23 times and released each time.”
