Tamar Estine Braxton was born in Severn, Maryland, on March 17, 1977, to Michael and Evelyn Braxton. Braxton began singing at a young age, the youngest of the Braxtons’ six children. Their father, Michael Braxton, was a pastor, and the Braxton children naturally joined the church choir.

Career
In 1989, Arista Records signed Toni, Traci, Towanda, Trina, and Tamar Braxton to their first recording contract. Their breakthrough song, “Good Life,” was scheduled for release in 1990. The age difference between the musicians caused business problems at the time of the single’s release.
The Braxtons were dropped by Arista Records. Toni Braxton was discovered singing at a gas station in 1991 by a producer, and L.A. Reid and “Babyface” Edmonds, two major producers and star makers, were there when he gave the sisters to them.
