Early life and education
Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah, popularly known as Taufik Batisah, was born into a Malay family on 10 December 1981. He is of mixed ethnicity, with Indian and Bugis ancestry.

His father’s name is Batisah Ahmad, who is an interior designer. His mother’s name is Normainah Bachok. Taufik Batisah’s parents divorced when he was thirteen years old. He has a brother whose name is simply Mustaffa Batisah. He believes in Islam.
Taufik Batisah attended Boon Lay Primary School and Jurong Secondary School and graduated from Singapore Polytechnic. He later attended the National Institute of Education and obtained a diploma.

The 42-year-old musician has kept the identity of his wife Sheena Akbal a secret, despite revealing on March 7 that Taufik Batisah would be getting married in April. He claimed that he wanted to keep their relationship secret at the time.
Speaking to the media at his wedding, Taufik Batisar said he was lucky to marry Ms Hina Akbar, an artist he had known before he became a Singaporean icon.

Tawfiq Batisa began his career by singing in the local hip-hop and R&B group Bonafide, along with rapper Mark Subramaniam, who goes by the stage name Mark Bonafide.
In 2004, he participated in the inaugural Singapore Idol, a reality television show. On 1 December 2004, Taufik Batisak was crowned the first Singapore Idol in front of over 8,000 spectators at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and 1.8 million viewers nationwide.

He signed a record deal with Sony BMG and ArtisteNetworks, the artist management arm of Hype Records. It was later revealed that a total of 1.1 million votes were cast that night, with Tawfiq Batisah receiving 682,000 and Sylvester Sim receiving 418,000.
After winning the award, he was offered several endorsement deals including Harmuni Rice, Samsung, 7-Eleven convenience stores and HSC Beverages. He is the first Singaporean artist to endorse Swiss watch company Swatch.
On January 14, 2005, Tawfik Batisah released his first English album, Blessings, which included his hit songs sung in the competition, including “Mrs. Jones and Me”, “Let’s Stay Together”, “Superstition” and “I Dream”.
With sales of 36,000 copies, “Blessings” broke the record for Singapore’s best-selling local English album in the past decade, and was included in the Singapore Guinness Book of Records, which still holds the record in the Singapore music industry.
