Early life and education
TB Joshua is a popular Nigerian pastor, televangelist and philanthropist, born on 12 June 1963 in Arigidi Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria. His parents, Folarin Balogun (mother) and Kolawole Balogun (father) named him Temitope Balogun Joshua.
As the only child of his parents, he was educated at St. Stephen’s Anglican Primary School. Although he dropped out of high school after only one year, TB Joshua, a well-educated man, initially pursued a career as a Yoruba-to-English translator. However, his path changed when he started working on a chicken farm.
Career
In 1987, TB Joshua founded Synagogue of All Nations (SCOAN), quickly grew into a large religious organization attracting followers from many parts of Africa and beyond. His influence reached new heights with the birth of Emmanuel TVa channel that broadcasts SCOAN services and “the miraculous crusade” to a global audience.
Joshua became famous for his incredible healing and miracle-working abilities during his services, attracting both devoted believers and skeptical critics. In addition, he founded Emmanuel TV Charityan organization that supports education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation initiatives across Africa. Joshua has also garnered a significant following on social media platforms such as YouTube.
However, tragedy struck in 2014 when a lodge at SCOAN collapsed, killing 116 people. Investigations were launched, raising allegations of negligence against TB Joshua and questioning his activities. Former followers have voiced concerns about alleged manipulation and exploitation within SCOAN, tarnishing Joshua’s reputation.
Further controversy erupted in 2021 when YouTube suspended his Emmanuel TV channel, citing hate speech policy violations. Joshua’s targeted comments targeting LGBTQ+ people led to the action.
On January 10, 2024, Dare Adejumo, a public affairs analyst and Synagogue of All Nations members, expressed their disagreement with the BBC documentary focusing on the late Temitope Babatunde Joshua, commonly known as TB Joshua.
