Ted Walsh (born 14 April 1950) is an Irish amateur horseman turned racehorse trainer. He is the father of Irish amateur National Hunt rider Katie Walsh and professional National Hunt rider Ruby Walsh.

Early life
Ted Walsh was born on 14 April 1950 in a private hospital in Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland. He grew up in a conservative Catholic family and attended a local Catholic parish.
Walsh learned to ride horses as a child and became interested in horse racing as he grew older. By his early twenties, he decided to pursue a career as an amateur jockey.

Career
Ted Walsh had a successful career as an amateur rider, winning the Irish Amateur Riders’ title 11 times. He won four Cheltenham Festival races, including the Kim Muir in 1974 with Castleruddery and the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup in 1986 with Prolan.
He also won the Foxhunter Chase in 1986 with Attitude Adjuster and the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1979 on Hilly Way. Walsh found further success with Daring Run, winning the Aintree Hurdle in 1981 and 1982.
After retiring as a jockey, Walsh became a racehorse trainer. He won international acclaim for training Papillon, who won the 2000 British Grand National, and Commanche Court, who won the Irish Grand National, both ridden by his son Ruby Walsh.
Commanche Court also brought Ted Walsh a win in the Triumph Hurdle and a second place in the 2002 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Walsh trained Rince Ri, who won two Ericsson Chases, including the Pillar Chase and the Power Gold Cup.
He also trained Jack High to second place in the 2005 Irish Grand National and later won the Betfred Gold Cup. In the 2012 English Grand National, he trained Seabass to third place and was ridden by his daughter Katie Walsh.

Ruby’s younger brother is Ted Walsh Junior, who is married to Nina Carberry. Ted Walsh is a regular commentator on RTE Racing, covering major races on RTE Television since 1981.
