Nicholas Hoult continues to rise as one of the most exciting young actors in Hollywood, and while he has some exciting projects on the horizon, he has already built a strong career for himself. Hoult has been around for a while, considering his recognition came fairly early with the 2002 Hugh Grant comedy-drama, About a Boy. Since then, Hoult has starred in both independent features and big-budget blockbusters, finding success in most of them.
At only 32, his filmography is already filled with some of the best movies of the last 20 years. He has appeared in smaller independent movies while also taking part in some big franchise movies. He has played the heroic lead the audience roots for and has been just as effective as the chilling villain. With a number of high-profile movies on the horizon, including playing Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s Superman, it is a perfect time to look back on Hoult’s career.

True History Of The Kelly Gang tells the fictionalized story of a real-life Australian bandit, Ned Kelly, and his gang operating in the 1870s. Ned is one of the most controversial characters in world criminal history, considered by many to be a noble robber and the real Robin Hood. Hoult portrays police officer Constable Fitzpatrick and shows off his acting skills in some of the most intense scenes in the movie, which he shares with another fellow young actor, George MacKay.
This is a story that has been told across a number of mediums over the years, but this version offers an intense and thrilling account of the legendary outlaw. Hoult is part of the exceptional cast, which includes Russell Crowe and Charlie Hunnam, with the strong ensemble elevating the period adventure beyond some of its familiar trappings.

Coming Down The Mountain (2007)
As David Phillips
Coming Down The Mountain is a 2007 TV movie that has not been seen by a wide audience but has touched the hearts of those who managed to catch it. The plot centers around two teenage siblings: David (Nicholas Hoult), the rebellious younger brother, and the older brother, Ben (Tommy Jessop), who has Down syndrome.
Hoult showcases how his talents have grown from his young child actor roles, carrying the movie.
This quiet drama pulls at the heartstrings and is determined not to leave anyone’s eyes dry after viewing. Hoult gives a subtle performance as a character full of emotions, hormones, and resentment of his brother who he feels gets more attention from his family and society. It is an emotional look at brotherhood with complex characters and a grounded story. Hoult showcases how his talents have grown from his young child actor roles, carrying the movie.

The Banker (2020)
As Matt Steiner
Nicholas Hoult has shown that he is able to stand out and make an impression, even in supporting roles. Based on the real lives of the first Black American bankers in the United States, The Banker shows the complicated road that led the men to their status in the 1950s. This drama touches on the socially relevant topic of racism and stays close to the time period with the style, clothes, and soundtrack.
A film full of charismatic and charming actors besides Hoult, the movie stars Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson. Hoult portrays Matt Steiner, a man who posed as the face of the operation and the front of the company in meetings. The three leading performances are the highlights of The Banker, as each actor makes their character compelling, interesting, and easy to root for. It is a fascinating uncovering of a lost piece of American history.

X-Men: First Class (2011)
As Hank McCoy
X-Men: First Class is the fourth mainline installment in the X-Men franchise, and following the lackluster reception of X-Men: The Last Stand, this was seen as a welcome return to form while also infusing the franchise with a fun retro style. The movie follows the earlier years of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lenchner (Michael Fassbender) when they first met and worked as friends to form a team of mutant heroes.
Director Matthew Vaughn managed the almost impossible task of creating a great prequel with a strong solid plot, stylish direction, and impressive performances from the cast. In First Class, Hoult takes on the role of the younger version of the Beast, a character who was previously played by Kelsey Grammer. Hoult’s natural charm and earnestness make the audience feel for this kind and gentle character, despite his more frightening appearance.

About A Boy (2002)
As Marcus Brewer
Many people might have forgotten that Nicholas Hoult is one of those rare actors who is able to escape the child actor phase of his career and become a star later in life as well. However, looking back on About a Boy, it is hard not to be impressed by his young performance. When irresponsible single Will Freeman meets 12-year-old timid boy Marcus (Hoult) at the Single Parents Alone Together community, his whole life changes forever. He develops a bond with a kid that he’s never experienced before and starts to shift his perspective on life and love.
At a young age, Hoult was able to create very tender and honest chemistry with the experienced actor Hugh Grant, who stole a lot of hearts with his rom-com characters. This young actor’s earnest performance in About A Boy moves even the most heartless viewer, which is fitting for a movie about human connection. It is a movie that excels beyond the typical genre fare, earning an Oscar nomination for its funny and touching script.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)
As Hank McCoy
A sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: First Class (2011), Days Of The Future Past combines two time periods and their forces in order to save the future. As the original cast of the X-Men face extinction in a future in which mutants are hunted down, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is sent back in time to find young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and recruit him to help stop what is coming.
Hoult reprises the role of Hank McCoy, who joins Wolverine and Charles on their mission in the 1970s. The film reaches near perfection in terms of blending the original cast with its younger counterparts, all while delivering an engaging thrilling cinematic experience. All the characters get to shine in the movie and Beast has a chance to really show off his incredible power and force.

There is a lot of excitement about Nicholas Hoult’s upcoming performance as Lex Luthor in Superman, but one of Hoult’s recent movies proves he can excel in the villain role. The Order is a true-crime thriller that stars Jude Law as an FBI agent who begins investigating a series of bank robberies in the 1980s and comes to believe they have ties to a white supremacist organization. Hoult plays the charismatic but dangerous leader of the terrorist group.
While keeping the grounded and intense true-crime aspects of the movie in place, The Order delivers a thrilling heist movie combined with a thriller. Reminiscent of movies like Heat, it is a gritty ride held together by some excellent performances. Law is outstanding as the stoic hero, while Hoult is very impressive in his rare villainous role, bringing a sinister nature to a grounded character.

One of Nicholas Hoult’s most recent movies is also his best role as a lead actor. Directed by Clint Eastwood, Juror #2 stars Hoult as Justin, a recovering alcoholic with a child on the way who finds himself selected as a member of the jury in a murder case. However, as Justin hears the details of the case, he begins to realize that he is actually the one who is responsible for this death.
The movie presents a gripping moral dilemma with Hoult perfectly playing this man who has turned his life around only to be confronted with a choice to accept the consequences or let someone else be punished. Juror #2 may be Eastwood’s final movie, and if that is true, the legendary filmmaker goes out on a high note with a riveting courtroom drama.

The Menu (2022)
As Tyler Ledford
Though Nicholas Hoult has played many lovable and heroic characters, he is also not afraid to play deeply unlikable ones, like in The Menu. The dark satirical comedy follows a group of people who are personally selected to attend an exclusive dining experience with a renowned chef (Ralph Fiennes) at his isolated island restaurant. Hoult and Anya Taylor-Joy star in The Menu cast as two of the diners who realize something sinister is at play.
The Menu received a great response from critics and the audience, who praised its dark goofiness, well-constructed thriller elements, and great performances. The movie brings forth the themes of class privilege, narcissism, and the standards of satisfaction in today’s society. Its straightforwardness may be appalling to some viewers, but will definitely give much food for thought about the imperfections of the modern world.

The Favourite (2018)
As Robert Harley
The Favourite is a product of the unique mind of Yorgos Lanthimos and features Nicholas Hoult as part of an incredible ensemble of actors. Set in the 18th century, it tells the story of the fight between Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) and her cousin, Abigail Hill (Emma Stone), for Queen Anne’s (Olivia Colman) love and attention. Hoult portrays Robert Harley, who inserts himself in the middle of the feud, hoping to gain control from the outcome.
The movie is a witty and darkly comedic satire of the palace life, filled with scheming characters all filled with their own insecurities. All three female stars of the movie were nominated for Oscars, with Colman winning Best Actress, and the movie itself earned a Best Picture nomination. Hoult would later reteam with the movie’s writer, Tony McNamara, on the show The Great, which is very similar in tone and one of Hoult’s best roles.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
As Nux
Following 30 years since the last entry into the franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road became a movie that set the bar for future action films very high. Tom Hardy steps into the role of the loner antihero out in the wastelands who finds himself reluctantly helping a fellow warrior protect a group of women against a vengeful warlord.
This reboot in the Mad Max franchise is filled with astounding post-apocalyptic scenery and delivers a great story about humanity and hope. Director George Miller ensured greatness for every single performance in the movie, including from Hoult, who portrayed Nux, a member of Immortan Joe’s army of War Boys that switches sides and joins Max’s cause in the war. The movie is a relentless action ride with effortless world-building that makes this a fascinating saga to step into after so long.
