From 2024 The Raven Some key characters from the comics and previous film adaptations are missing. The 2024 film starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven takes many liberties in adapting James O’Barr’s work. The various ways in which The Raven 2024 changes the comics was partly an intentional decision to help differentiate the film from the original 1994 film starring Brandon Lee. For anyone familiar with the comics or previous adaptations, checking out The RavenThe cast and characters in ‘ reveal how different the film really is.
Although Bill Skarsgård’s Eric Draven is lifted from the comics, FKA Twigs’ Shelly is the only central character in the film who is not an original creation. This includes Danny Huston’s Vincent Roeg, the film’s main villain with no connection to the comics, and Sami Bouajila’s Kronos, a reimagined version of Eric’s regular spirit guide. In fact, there were opportunities to The Raven‘s finale includes other familiar characters from the previous comics and films. By devoting so much time to Eric and Shelly and having a supporting cast of entirely new characters, some notable people from the mythology are left out.
Related All the actors who have played the crow
The Crow franchise has had several different actors portray the title character in movies and TV shows, and not all of them have played Eric Draven.
10 Jerecia
From the comics and the 1994 movie
Sherri is a young girl in The Raven Sherri is a streetwise mythos who forms a strong relationship with Eric. She was named Sarah in the 1994 film, with Rochelle Davis playing the role. Sherri is an important character in the comics and past adaptations due to the friendship she has with Eric. The 1994 film furthered their connection by having Eric take care of her even before he became The Crow due to the absence of Sherri’s mother.
Sherri has no role in The Raven 2024. The character is completely removed from the adaptation and it is unknown if her appearance was ever considered. She could have been included as part of Eric’s life before he met Shelly or after his death. The film could have even adapted her to be one of the younger girls related to Roeg, which would add a new interpretation of the character.
9 T-Bird
From the comics and the 1994 movie
The character of T-Bird is also missing in The Raven 2024. In the comics, he is the head of the gang responsible for killing Eric and Shelly. He appeared in the 1994 film, played by David Patrick Kelly, but his role was reduced. T-Bird still plays a pivotal role in either version of the story, and could have been part of the 2024 film’s reimagining to add a layer of comic accuracy to the story.
Instead of using T-Bird as the main villain, The Raven In 2024 he is replaced by Vincent Roeg. They are very different characters, as T-Bird is just a low-level gang leader and Roeg is a very successful man with powers of persuasion in charge of bringing good souls to hell. The Raven expanded the supernatural side of the world and abandoned the gang’s involvement in the deaths of Eric and Shelly, there was no place for T-Bird.
$8 top tier
From the comics and the 1994 movie
Top Dollar was the main villain of 1994. The Ravenbut he’s completely absent from the latest reimagining. Top Dollar was just a small-time drug dealer who sexually assaulted Shelly in the comics. But by the time the original movie was made, he was elevated to the status of head of a criminal empire. Top Dollar’s biggest role is where his time in the franchise peaked, as he’s now been cut from the 2024 movie and has no connection to Eric Draven’s origin story.
Much like T-Bird, there wasn’t a clear path to include Top Dollar based on the story and how different it was. The Raven 2024 is the original film. Since Eric and Shelly’s deaths came about because of Roeg’s henchmen attacking them, Top Dollar and others become unnecessary. It might have been possible for the film to include him as part of Roeg’s group to keep an additional known character in the mix. However, that never happened.
7 members of the T-Bird gang
From the comics and the 1994 movie
The other members of T-Bird’s gang also do not appear in 2024. The RavenIn the comics, Funboy, Tin-Tin, and Tom-Tom are featured as prominent members of the gang. Funboy is T-Bird’s right-hand man and has a relationship with Sherri’s mother, while Tin-Tin and Tom-Tom are low-level gang members. Tin-Tin is the first to die after Eric becomes The Crow and begins seeking revenge.
Tom-Tom was not included in the 1994 film, as he was replaced by a new character named Shank.
The Raven Eric and Shelly’s new origin story in 2024 made it difficult to include the members of T-Bird’s gang, at least as characters that were remotely close to the comics. Instead, the film essentially replaces these characters with members of Roeg’s team, such as Marian (Laura Bern). These are the characters who are henchmen working for the main villain and the ones responsible for killing Eric and Shelly originally. So while Funboy, Tin-Tin, and Tom-Tom aren’t physically in the 2024 film, the new characters fill similar positions.
6 Officer Albrecht
From the comics and the 1994 movie
The character of Officer Albrecht is also missing in The Raven 2024. He appeared in the original comics as a local cop who meets and works with Eric. The 1994 film cast Ernie Hudson to play Albrecht, and he received a major role in the story as a result. The police officer covers up Eric and Shelly’s murder case, going so far as to risk his job security to help Eric once he is resurrected. Albrecht also has a close relationship with Sherri, as the two bond over hot dogs and the knowledge that Eric is The Crow.
There is no role for Albrecht in The Raven 2024. There is a detective in the film who is tasked with investigating the deaths of Eric and Shelly, but he works for Roeg and is corrupt. It would seem that this new character was used rather than risk generating controversy by making Albrecht a villain this time around.
5 The Skull Cowboy
It was cut from the 1994 film
The Raven 2024 does not feature the comic book character known as The Skull Cowboy. In the comics, The Skull Cowboy is a spirit that helps guide The Crow, keeping him focused on the mission at hand. Audiences also didn’t get to see the character in the original 1994 film. However, The Skull Cowboy was cut from the film. The Ravenas he was originally intended to play a pivotal role in the third act. Changes made to the film following Brandon Lee’s passing were partly attributed to the character’s scenes being cut.
Like other entries, The Skull Cowboy is left out. The Raven 2024 in favor of a different character who fills a similar role. Kronos essentially fills the same role as The Skull Cowboy, as he is used to explain Bill Skarsgård’s powers in The Crow and the rules of this world. It’s unclear why the film didn’t simply use the spirit of the comics, though the expense of making a skull-faced character could be one reason.
4 Joshua Zane
Another raven in the comics
From The Raven 2024 is another film that follows Eric Draven, other versions of The Crow, such as Joshua Zane, are also not included. Joshua Zane is a Native American from the Crow Nation who became the supernatural being in The Crow: Time OutThe three-issue miniseries follows Joshua as he is resurrected 100 years after he, his wife and son were killed by Confederate soldiers. His mission is to kill those responsible for their murders, who have since been reincarnated as a motorcycle gang. Including him in the film would have cluttered Eric’s story.
3 Iris Shaw
The first female raven in comics
The Raven 2024 also doesn’t include Iris Shaw, who was the first female Raven in the comics. She appeared in the three-issue miniseries. The Raven: Flesh and BloodThe comic tells the story of Iris Shaw, who is The Crow, after she and her unborn baby are killed by terrorists. Interestingly, Iris Shaw does not have the full extent of The Crow’s healing powers for an unspecified reason. She has never appeared in a live-action adaptation of the comics.
Hannah Foster as Bobbie Phillips from the TV show The Crow: Stairway to Heaven was the first female version of The Crow to appear on screen.
2 Michael Korby
Another raven in the comics
Michael Korby is another version of The Crow from the comics, and he also does not appear in the 2024 film. Korby is from the three-issue miniseries. The Crow: Savage Justicewhich follows his time as The Raven after he and his wife died. He’s a slightly different take on the supernatural being thanks to the connection he has to Gorgon. His tattoos of the gods allow him to regenerate as long as Gorgon blood is still running through his body. There was no place for him to appear in the 2024 reimagining.
1. Jamie Osterberg
A modern raven in comics
A more modern version of The Crow is also missing. The Raven 2024 with Jamie Osterberg. Its story unfolds throughout the 2013 five-issue miniseries known as The Raven: Death and RebirthThe story takes place in Japan, when Jamie is resurrected to free the souls of his friends and fiancée. Notably, Jamie Osterberg’s version of The Crow possesses a powerful sword. Since Jamie’s story as The Crow is very disconnected from Eric’s, it makes sense that he’s among the missing characters in The Raven.
