Jelly Roll is sharing all the details about his remarkable weight loss journey, including the price he paid to lose more than 110 pounds.
In a recent interview with People magazine, Jelly Roll (real name Jason DeFord) said he had to find a way to overcome a toxic relationship with food that stemmed from his grandmother taking him to fast food restaurants. ate fast as a child.
For the 39-year-old singer, the hardest aspect of losing weight was restructuring his thinking.
“My battle with food addiction has changed the way I view food over the past 39 years,” says Jelly Roll. “I’ve never had a healthy relationship with food, so that’s the difficult part.”
Jelly Roll grew up in a family where healthy eating was not a focus and his eating habits got out of control at an early age.
“No one in my family has a healthy relationship with food,” he explains. “So that’s the hard part — actually fighting that demon in the beginning and staying with that discipline and commitment.”
Jelly Roll has been on a roll since August, when he launched his “Beautiful Broken Tour,” and has lost 60 pounds or more since it started.
His success comes from playing basketball with his teammates every day and eating his way through healthy meals instead of cheap, saturated foods.
“It’s great because at one time in my life, the culture I built on tour was all about alcohol and drugs,” he said. “And now our travel culture revolves around eating healthy and exercising, checking in with our crew every day.”
Just this past year, Jelly Roll found the motivation to continue losing weight as he trained for a 5K and actually ran a 5K, which was a personal best for him. He is looking to lose more weight to improve his health.
