The tracklist of BTS’ Jin’s album sparks debate about K-Pop’s trend of super short songs

BTS’s Jin sparked a heated debate when announcing the tracklist for his upcoming EP, Delighted.

After being the first member of BTS to be discharged from the army in Korea, Jin is busy working in the new music field. Delighted is due out on November 15 and includes the pre-release single “I’ll Be There”. However, what caught the attention of K-pop fans was not the song but the length of the other songs included in the album.

In the Spotify preview, fans shared their thoughts on how all (except one) of the songs are under three minutes long.

In particular, fans have pointed out the trend of short songs taking over K-pop songs. Many people hate how platforms like TikTok seem to promote shorter songs, making songs with much shorter albums more popular.

“Just WHYYYYYYYY. Why isn’t there a 3 minute song,” one person wrote on Reddit.

“It feels like shrinking inflation,” another commented.

One Reddit user went on to explain their disappointment as well as why some songs could have been shorter.

“Most composers can’t create a full sub-3-minute song structure unless the tempo is extremely fast. So parts of the song are cut out completely, leaving the song feeling disjointed and unsatisfying. Songs used to have an intro, an outro, a proper verse.” bridge, and verses longer than 4 lines but here we are. A lot of K-pop songs would be better with an outro, they just don’t exist anymore because of stupid streaming services trying to get as many plays as possible,” they said.

One person continued to blame TikTok for the short-lived songs.

They said: “Music tiktokification is one of the worst things that has happened, I HATE IT”.

This isn’t the first artist to raise concerns about this growing trend, as TXT’s recent album surprised fans with a total of six songs that were only 14 minutes long.

“No, this is better, because the songs are almost 3 minutes long – the new txt album is only 14 minutes. 6 songs. 14 minutes…,” another person pointed out.

“14 minutes is crazy, not even half the lecture,” one person wrote on X.

Jin has yet to respond to this controversy and so far, Delighted will be released as planned.
