Instagram is a social networking service owned by the American company Meta Platforms. It allows users to share photos and videos, which can be edited with filters and organized using hashtags and geotags.
Users can choose to share their posts publicly or with approved followers. The app also offers features like browsing other users’ content by tags and location, viewing trending content, liking photos, and following other users to see their content in a personalized feed.
Instagram quickly became popular, reaching 1 million registered users within two months of launch, 10 million within a year, and 1 billion by June 2018. In April 2012, Facebook Inc. acquired Instagram for approximately $1 billion.
An Android version of the app was released in April 2012, followed by a limited desktop interface in November 2012, a Fire OS app in June 2014, and a Windows 10 app in October 2016 . By October 2015, more than 40 billion photos had been uploaded to the platform.
While Instagram has been praised for its success and influence, it has also been criticized for its potential negative impact on youth mental health, policy and interface changes, accusations of censorship, and illegal and inappropriate content uploaded by its users.

Threads, a new app developed by Meta as an alternative to Twitter, is expected to launch on July 6, amid a surge in users seeking an alternative platform owned by Elon Musk. The Instagram-connected app appeared in the Apple App Store earlier this week and is expected to be released. Meta created a countdown website to build anticipation for the release.
According to a preview of the app, Threads aims to provide a “text-based conversation” space where the community can come together to discuss a variety of topics of interest. Users will be able to follow and connect with their favorite creators and like-minded individuals, and share their own ideas and creativity with the world.
Screenshots indicate that users will be able to log into Threads using their Instagram accounts and follow their existing contacts. The app appears to have a user interface similar to Twitter, including the ability to retweet, like, and limit who can reply to posts.
Interestingly, Threads was originally the name of a 2019 app that Meta planned to use to compete with Snapchat, but it was later dropped but the brand was retained. Meta has yet to provide any official comments on the upcoming product.
Meta will enter a field of platform competition that includes BlueSky and Mastodon, all of which have been vying to replace Twitter since Elon Musk took over the platform. Twitter faces challenges such as requiring users to log in to view the site and imposing restrictions on unverified accounts. The platform’s moderation decisions and growing instability have also led advertisers to reduce or pause spending.
BlueSky, developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, had to temporarily halt new registrations due to huge demand after rate limits were implemented. Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, mentioned in a company-wide meeting that creators and public figures want a better-managed platform and therefore need alternatives to Twitter.
However, users considering joining Meta’s Twitter alternative may have privacy concerns. Jack Dorsey highlighted the issue by tweeting a screenshot of the Threads app’s privacy information, with the caption: “All your bases belong to us.”
The app is capable of collecting various forms of user data, including health information, financial details, contact information, browsing history, location and purchase information. It’s worth noting that Twitter no longer has a news department, as inquiries sent to its previous email address received an automated reply in the form of a convenience emoji.
