Early life and education
Tisha Campbell was born on October 13, 1968 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. However, she grew up in Newark, New Jersey, where she attended Newark High School for the Arts and the Washington Academy of Music in East Orange, New Jersey.
Mona (née Raye) Shockley (now Mona Washington Campbell), her mother, was a physician, music agent, gospel singer, and voice teacher who raised her daughter.
Her father, Clifton Campbell, was a steel worker and singer who now works with poor youth on both the east and west coasts as a chess grandmaster.
Tisha Campbell’s parents encouraged her to pursue her passion for music. She has five siblings, including an older brother, a younger sister, and three younger brothers. Her two siblings are Tiara Campbell and Jermaine Campbell.
Career
Tisha Campbell first appeared on television at the age of six in a 1974 episode of PBS’s The Big Blue Marble. She won several talent shows as a child.
She starred in children’s shows such as Kids Are People Too, Unicorn Tales (where she played the lead role of Daisy Bunsen in the episode The Magnificent Major) and Captain Kangaroo.
Tisha Campbell co-starred with Martin’s future co-star Tichina Arnold in the musical Little Shop of Horrors as Chiffon, a member of The Supremes-like girl group Greek Chorus when she was 17.
