Early life
Antonio Salvatore Ladanza was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 21, 1951. His father was a garbage collector, and his mother was an accountant. His younger brother, Matty Jr., a restaurant owner in Los Angeles, was born in 1954.
He grew up in East New York, Brooklyn until the age of 14 when his family moved to Malverne, Long Island. Malverne High School was his alma mater, and he graduated in 1969. He received his BA in history from the University of Dubuque.
He received a wrestling scholarship to attend college when his friends pressured him to enter the New York City Golden Gloves tournament, where he unexpectedly made it to the finals, where he ultimately lost. Danza met and married his first wife while still in college.
