Early life

Tsakani Maluleke grew up in Soshanguvien in Pretoria before moving to Johannesburg with her family when she was a teenager.

Her family owned a supermarket where she started working when she was nine. The first of four siblings, she has two older sisters and one older brother.

Education

She completed her secondary education at St. Andrew’s School for Girls in Senderwood, Johannesburg. She then went on to study Accounting at the University of Cape Town and graduated with a Bcom in 1996.

Tsakani went on to obtain a postgraduate degree in accounting in 1997. She also holds another postgraduate degree in Public Development and Management.

Career

A registered auditor, Tsakani Maluleke has over 20 years of experience working in both the public and private sectors. She is a seasoned Chartered Accountant and is also the non-executive chairperson of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

She joined the Office of the Auditor General of South Africa in 2012 and was appointed national leader of audit services. In 2014, she was appointed Deputy Auditor General of South Africa, a position she has held ever since. She received the BMF Black Leadership Award in 2018.

In October 2020, the Parliamentary Special Committee on Appointments recommended Tsakani to be appointed as Auditor General of South Africa. She will replace the current Auditor General, Kimi Makwetu, whose term of office expires on 30 November 2020.

Her appointment was later confirmed, making her the first female Attorney General in South Africa’s history. She will serve a non-renewable seven-year term.

Personal life

Her father, George Maluleke, was a lawyer and later a judge. Her sister, Basani Maluleke, is the CEO of Bank of Africa.

The mother of two daughters, Tsakani Maluleke is unmarried and has been divorced twice. Not much is known about her current relationship status as she leads a private life.
