early life

Tupac “2pac” Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York. His birth name was Lesane Parish Crooks, and when he was one year old, his mother changed his name to Tupac Amaru Shakur.

His parents, Billy Garland and Afeni Shakur, were both members of the Black Panther Party. When Tupac was five years old, his father cut off all contact with Afeni. Later, Afeni and Mutulu Shakur gave birth to Sekiya. Mutulu did not stay either. His mother Afeni raised the two children alone.

He spent his early years traveling with his family. In 1986, they finally settled in Baltimore (Maryland). Tupac “2pac” Shakur attended the prestigious Baltimore School for the Arts. He studied acting, jazz, poetry, and ballet, and won the title of the school’s best rapper several times.

Before he graduated, his family moved to Marin City, California. It was here that he began selling drugs on the streets and getting involved in gang culture, which would later inform his rap lyrics.

Profession

In 1989, Tupac ‘2pac’ Shakur began taking poetry classes with Leila Steinberg. He later convinced Steinberg to become his manager, even though she had no music industry experience.

Steinberg eventually got Atron Gregory, the manager of the rap group Digital Underground, to sign Tupac. In 1990, Atron secured a job for Tupac as a roadie and backing dancer for the hip-hop group Digital Underground.

In January 1991, Tupac ‘2pac’ Shakur made his recording debut under the stage name 2Pac. The song, titled “Same Song,” was featured on the soundtrack to the film Nothing But Trouble, starring Dan Aykroyd. Tupac also appeared on Digital Underground’s album Sons of the P.

Eventually, Gregory replaced Steinberg as the band’s manager. He also helped Tupac sign with Interscope Records. A month after Son of P was released, 2Pacalypse Now was released. It was Tupac’s first solo album.

2Capalypse Now is a departure from Digital Underground in style and content. His albums poetically depict the personal struggles of socioeconomic disadvantage.

Tupac “2pac” Shakur often complained that people misunderstood his lyrics. He said he wanted to use rap to express the feelings of black people. His albums focus on black issues and are still relevant today.

In 1992, Tupac starred in the crime drama film Juice. He joined the ranks of rappers-turned-actors such as Ice Cube and Ice-T.

In late 1993, he formed the band Thug Life and produced several albums. His album All Eyes on Me debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. It sold over 5 million copies in its first year. In the same year, he co-starred with Janet Jackson in the romantic film Poetic Justice.

Tupac ‘2pac’ Shakur took full advantage of his success. He returned to Hollywood and starred in the films Bullet, Gridlock’d and Gang Related.

In August 1996, Tupac released his fifth and final studio album, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, under the new stage name Makaveli.
