Going Red is a 2022 animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Domee Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, the film tells the story of Meilin “Mei” Lee, a 13-year-old girl from Toronto who transforms into a giant panda due to the intense emotions caused by a family curse.
Domee Shi is best known for her short film “Bao,” which she based on her own experiences growing up in Toronto. Development began in May 2018, taking inspiration from anime and adding hand-drawn effects to Pixar’s customary 3D animation. Ludwig Göransson composed the score, with original songs contributed by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.
It was originally planned for a worldwide theatrical release, but plans were changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered in London, Toronto and Los Angeles before being released on Disney+ on March 11, 2022. Despite this, it was successfully released in most countries, grossing over $20 million at the box office, and earning critical acclaim. The film will be released in the United States on February 9, 2024 after being nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
Become famous plot
In 2002 in Toronto, 13-year-old Li Mei hid her love for the boy band 4*Town from her strict mother Ming. One night, Ming embarrasses Mei in front of her crush Devin, triggering a transformation: Mei transforms into a red panda in a fit of emotion. Her family revealed it was a genetic trait that protected them but now carries risks. Mei learns to control her transformation with the help of her friends.
Mei’s friends secretly helped her raise money to buy concert tickets, but Mei’s mother did not allow her to attend. Mei struggled with her identity until her father encouraged her to embrace her unique abilities. During a ritual to suppress her powers, Mei decides to keep them and attends a concert where her mother transforms into a giant panda, causing chaos.
Mei confronts her mother, leading to a fight in which Ming accidentally knocks Ming unconscious. With the help of family and friends, Mei reconciles with her mother and accepts her own path, deciding to remain a red panda. Eventually, Mei and Ming mend their relationship, and Mei found a balance between her temple duties, spending time with friends, and embracing her unique abilities.
