UB40
UB40 are a popular British reggae and pop band formed in December 1978 in Birmingham. They have had over 50 singles on the UK Singles Chart over the years and have achieved huge global success, selling over 70 million records worldwide.
The band’s original line-up had a diverse ethnic makeup, including members of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni backgrounds. Their hit singles “Food for Thought”, “Red Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” all topped the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100.
UB40’s most successful albums, Labor of Love (1983) and Promises and Lies (1993), reached number one on the UK album charts. Together with Madness, they set the record for the longest stay on the UK singles chart in the 1980s.
The band’s lineup remained stable for nearly 29 years until 2008, when lead singer Ali Campbell left, followed by keyboardist Mickey Virtue. Despite some changes, UB40 continued and in 2014 had legal issues over the band’s name. Matt Doyle became the new frontman in 2021 after Duncan Campbell retired due to health issues. UB40’s enduring success and ever-evolving lineup demonstrates their lasting impact on the music industry.
