Unicorn Overlord

Unicorn Overlord is an upcoming tactical role-playing game created by Takafumi Noma in 2014 and developed by Vanillaware. The game is published by Atlus and is expected to be released on March 8, 2024 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The storyline unfolds in the war-torn continent of Feverris, as the exiled prince Alain strives to regain his kingdom from the Zenoyllan Empire, led by the rogue General Valmer.

Players will guide Alan and his army through real-time large-scale battles, including field movement and combat. The concept was developed by Noma with the approval of Vanillaware founder George Kamitani to revive the essence of classic tactics games from the 1990s.

Noma worked on the project for ten years as director, programmer and lead artist, with production overlapping with other Vanillaware ventures. The game’s music, composed by Basiscape’s Mitsuhiro Kaneda team, adds to the immersive experience. Unicorn Overlord promises a modern take on nostalgic tactical gameplay, combining strategic gameplay with an engaging narrative.

Each character has a predetermined class, weapon, and combat skills, adding to the game’s strategic depth as players embark on a journey to defeat the challenges and enemies of different nations.

Rosalind	The diviner of the dark elves, the sister of Eltorinde. Lauhar fled after falling into Zenoira and is now gathering an army to fight back.
eltolinde	Twin sister of Rosalind, Turenos of Elheim. Surrender to Zenoira and lead her country out of captivity.
Ithilien	A swordsman and knight who serves Elheim and leads the guerrillas against Zenoira.
Unifi	A skilled archer from the Frostflower Resistance. Humans gave birth to her, but she was raised by her adoptive mother, Ramona. Played an important role in the opposition to Zenora.
Ramona	The leader of Shuanghua and the adoptive mother of Unifee. Coming from owl bloodline, respected by all beast races.
Morad	A lion-like warrior from Shuanghua, known for his strength. A key warrior in the fight against Zenoira.
Dinah	A fox-like creature who commands the Snowpetal troops. Bad-tempered, but very caring about her troops.
Nigel	Head of the Knights of the Sacred Heart. Became captain after defending Albion against Zenoira.
Sanatio	An angelic figure who leads the Order of the Vortex Knights and serves as a Winged Knight. Leadership potential is recognized early.
alsina	A witch loyal to the Zenuilan Army and once served the Konya royal family. Pledge of allegiance to Galerius with ulterior motives.
Bartero	A wizened wizard who serves Galerius and is proficient in dark spells and curses. His face is still blurry.
Ergo	The senior commander of Zenoira’s northern army, famous for his ancient armor. Rumor has it that no one has ever seen his face and survived.

Hauskar	A class with excellent physical attacks, shattering the opponent’s armor. A follow-up strike can be carried out after the battle is over.
Gladiator	Tough class with good health. You can chop down enemies with your great ax and prevent stamina loss by healing yourself.
Archer	Crossbow-wielding professions will cause high physical damage. It has anti-flying skills, follow-up attacks, and the ability to heal allies.
Priest	Good at healing ability but lacking in attack ability. Good at using healing skills to improve the survival rate of allies.
Wyvern Knight	Soaring in the air, good at both offense and defense. It has high avoidance of ground attacks and anti-cavalry skills. The arrow is weak.
shaman	Specifically applies debuffs to enemies, impeding their movements and reducing their abilities. Curses instill fear in opponents.
Elf Swordsman	Magic Elf Swordsman’s attacks are full of magical power. Can create barriers to protect allies.
werewolf	A warrior from the wolf clan, good at targeting weak enemies. Possess skills that enhance nighttime abilities.
feather bow	Angel archers excel in agility. Has the ability to hinder enemies and a high evasion rate. Weak against arrows and real strikes.
Griffin Knight	Flying level, with excellent dodge and magic defense capabilities. Effective against cavalry and can directly attack the back row. The arrow is weak.
feather sword	An agile flying swordsman. Dodge melee attacks and directly attack the back row. Fragile to arrows.
hunter	Bow swing level with high accuracy. Possess anti-flight skills, real strikes, accurate aiming. Effective against Griffin Knights. The arrow is weak.

Unicorn Overlord gameplay

In the game “Unicorn Overlord”, players play the role of the exiled prince Alan, leading the People’s Liberation Army through the charming country of Feifries. Gameplay features exploration as the player guides Alain across the world, visiting towns, interacting with services such as blacksmiths and merchants to equip armies, and participating in story-driven and optional battles.

The overworld is filled with sprites representing enemies, and players can roam freely and decide the order in which they deal with events. In addition, towns also offer side quests to collect materials and events, allowing Alan to strengthen his relationships with other characters.

Combat in Unicorn Overlord takes place in real time, with movement and encounters triggering combat on a vast battlefield. Players can pause mid-battle to strategize and inspect units. Teams are made up of up to six characters with specific professions, each of which affects their abilities on the grid-based battlefield. The game introduces a resource called “Courage”, which is earned by completing battles and determining the number of deployable units.

Various character classes, with different attack ranges and skills, add depth to the strategic aspects of the game. Battles proceed automatically based on character attributes and player-set behaviors, and the outcome determines victory or defeat. “Unicorn Overlord” provides players with three difficulty options, and even unlocks an online multiplayer arena for additional challenges after the story develops to a certain stage.
