Meet Vance Walker, American Ninja Warrior Season 15 Winner

Season 15 of American Ninja War just ended after crowning Vance Walker as the winner of this season. Vance, was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was told he would have to wear leg braces for life and would never become an athlete.

Vance struggled with bullying at school because of his condition, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines as an incurable neurological disease caused by abnormal brain development or damage. Developing brain damage affects muscles. When she was only 17 weeks pregnant, Vance’s mother went into premature labor. Before giving birth at 36 weeks, she had to stay in the hospital for many months.

Vance told Today that seeing “Kevin Bull do a backflip in Cannonball Alley” piqued his interest in the competition. Since then Vance has competed in several tournaments. ANW competitions, including ANW Junior, ANW Section 13, et ANW Season 14.

During the Qualifiers, competing Ninjas encounter several new challenges and rule changes, including an 18.5-foot-tall Mega Wall and a $10,000 guarantee to any Ninja who can complete the course in under full one minute. Vance bravely took on the challenge, showing perseverance to finish later in the race. The 18-year-old native Texan entered his qualifying round without any errors.

Vance skillfully overcame all challenges and cleared the Mega Wall to win $10,000. Vance achieved the best course completion time among his fellow Ninjas on semi-final night. He and Isaiah Thomas were sent to the Power Tower to compete for the coveted Safe Pass thanks to Vance’s victory.

Due to the more challenging nature of Stages 1 and 2, the Safety Pass gave Ninja a second chance if they failed in those Final rounds. Vance won the Safe Pass by just a hair over Thomas in their head-to-head contest, giving the winning Ninja a victory that could change his life.

Because not one but two Ninjas were able to complete Stage 4 within the allotted 30-second time limit, season 15 of ANW kept audiences on their toes. With a final time of 00:27.99, experienced competitor Daniel Gil finally achieved a comprehensive Victory, forever cementing his ANW history. However, Vance finished one second faster than Daniel, clocking 00:26.75, earning him the title of Champion.

Speaking with Distractify Vance shared that he doesn’t know what he will do with the prize money. He added: “I was 18 years old and had a million dollars. And luckily, I was raised to be better with my money. I have made large investments throughout my life. And I got into crypto early. So I think I’m going to invest a lot in that. And I’m almost ready [keep] my money and try to make as much of it as possible.”

Following his historic win, Vance took to his IG and wrote: “Winning American Ninja Warrior has been the focus of my life for 8 years now and to finally realize this dream is the completely wild. I was so lucky to do it with my best friends and training partners, @e.than_bartnicki @caleb_bergie @rjroams @nacssa_garemore and congratulations to @kingdom_ninja for achieving an outright Victory.”

Both of Vance’s parents publicly shared the struggles and successes that the season 15 winner has witnessed in his life. “I remember… watching the show with him and seeing the previous winners,” Kent told TODAY.com. “You could see him just dreaming that one day he would get there, never really thinking he would but just thinking he could.”

Vance’s life began on the brink.

Speaking to the outlet, Stacey recalled, “For so many weeks (doctors) came in and said, ‘He’s not going to make it. He won’t be able to do that. Starting at week 20, it was: ‘Okay, he can do it, but he might have brain damage. He could be blind.”

At age 1, Kent and Stacey watched their son not walk. “Initially, there was just fear of how it would affect him… and his future,” Kent added. “It’s about what we can do to help him feel ‘normal’ so he has all the same opportunities as everyone else.”

Bullies reportedly teased Vance at school because of his braces or the way he walked. While other students at his school walked in groups with their friends, Vance would walk around the track on his own. He eats lunch alone.

“People would ask him, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ That’s the biggest problem,” Stacey added. “I want to tell everyone: ‘There’s nothing wrong with him. That’s how he was created.”

Vance attributes his ability to survive years of bullying to his parents’ encouragement and support. His parents allowed him to go to school online when he was 13 so he could focus on his “American Ninja Warrior” training.
