Early life and education

Viola Davis was born on August 11, 1965 in St. Matthews, South Carolina, with Mae Alice Davis, a maid, factory worker and homemaker, and Dan Davis, a horse trainer. She has five siblings.

Davis was detained with her mother during a civil rights protest when she was two years old. Davis is the second cousin of actor Mike Colter, who is best known for playing Marvel Comics’ Luke Cage.

Davis attended Central Falls High School and she attributes her interest in the arts in part to her love of stage acting. Davis was a participant in TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support Services as a teenager.
