Early life and education
Viola Davis was born on August 11, 1965, in St. Matthews, South Carolina, to Mae Alice Davis, a maid, factory worker, and homemaker, and Dan Davis, a horse trainer. She has five siblings.
Davis was detained with her mother during a civil rights protest when she was two years old. Davis is a second cousin of actor Mike Colter, best known for his role as Marvel Comics’ Luke Cage.
Davis attended Central Falls High School, and she attributes her interest in the arts in part to her love of theater. Davis was a participant in TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support Services as a teenager.
