Early life
Vlatko Andonovski was born on September 14, 1976 in Skopje, Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia.
Due to the unstable political situation in Eastern Europe at the time, Vlatko Andonovski’s parents moved to a neighboring country and lived as farmers for a decade.
However, his luck changed when a football scout spotted him at a school sports competition.
Vlatko Andonovski joined the Macedonian football academy at a very young age and trained in various settings as an amateur athlete.
Due to constant travel, the 55-year-old has not been able to spend much time with his family and childhood friends; and is keen to make a big step forward in his career with the club’s senior team.
Education
With most of his formative years spent on the pitch, Vlatko Andonovski was unable to further his education beyond high school until he had the opportunity to move to the United States a few years later.
Before moving, Andonovski completed his basic education in Macedonia and was expected to achieve great things as a Macedonian footballer.
Vlatko Andonovski’s move to the United States provided him with the opportunity to further his education; he graduated from Park University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration/Management.
He also proved his sports acumen by obtaining a Master of Sports Science (MSC) in Soccer Coaching from Ohio University in 2017.
Career
After impressing at the Macedonian football academy, Vlatko Andonovski received several offers; all of which required a mutual agreement. He played as a centre-back for FK Rabotnički, Makedonija GP and FK Vardar, over the course of six football seasons. He also played in the Macedonian First Football League, the European Cup and the Intertoto Cup.
Vlatko Andonovski’s big break came after he moved to the National Professional Soccer League in 2000. At the age of 24, he signed with the Wichita Wings and impressed in his first season. He went on to play for the Kansas City Comets, California Cougars and Philadelphia Kixx of the Major Indoor Soccer League before hanging up his boots.
On February 8, 2015, Vlatko Andonovski joined Kim Røntved–the Wichita Wings coach at the time–for a single game. Both were retired and played against each other on the court; for their respective teams.
Coaching career
Vlatko Andonovski signed a contract to coach FC Kansas City on December 5, 2012. He also took over as head coach of the Kansas City Comets the following year; after being given the role of senior coach.
He was appointed after serving as assistant coach to Kim Røntved for three seasons. In 2014, Andonovski won two major titles in the United States; winning the MISL championship with the Kansas City Comets and the NWSL championship with FC Kansas City.
Three years later, he replaced Laura Harvey at Seattle Reign FC, coaching the team through a transition. Prior to the start of the 2019 season, the team moved from Seattle to Tacoma, Washington. The team was also renamed Reign FC, before renaming itself OL Reign in 2020.
Vlatko Andonovski proved his worth during the Reign’s 2019 season, leading them to a fourth-place finish in the NWSL. His performance was praised by pundits and analysts for the number of players he missed due to injury at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He was appointed head coach of the United States women’s national soccer team that same year.
Personal life
Vlatko Andonovski holds dual citizenship (Macedonovski and American) and resides in Kansas City, Missouri. He is happily married to Biljana Andonovski and is the father of three children; Dragana Andonovski, Luka Andonovski and Daria Andonovski.
Because of his achievements as a player and coach in the sport of soccer, Vlatko Andonovski is highly respected in the United States.
He is also a local hero in Macedonia and travels during the offseason to visit his parents. Although the American football coach spent many years in the United States, he only recently received US citizenship in 2015.
