Early life and education
Walter James Lewis was born on December 1, 1959 in Hawthorne, Australia and was raised by his parents, Jim Lewis and June Lewis. He grew up with a sibling, Wally Lewis.
Walter attended Brisbane State High School, where he also played Rugby Union. In 1977, he had the opportunity to tour Europe and Japan with the Australian Schoolboys Rugby Union team.
Career
Walter James Lewis was a successful rugby player, but his coaching career was not as well known. He began his coaching career with the Gold Coast Seagulls in 1991, where he also captained the team in his final playing season.

However, the team struggled under his leadership, finishing bottom of the table in both 1991 and 1992. Despite retiring as a player in 1993, Lewis continued to coach the Seagulls, but they again finished bottom of the table, which led to his resignation as manager.
