Wanda Sykes was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. When she was in the third grade, her family moved to Maryland. She was born on March 7, 1964.

Her mother, Marion Louise Sykes (née Peoples), was a banker, and her father, Harry Ellsworth Sykes, was a U.S. Army colonel at the Pentagon. Her brother, Harry Sykes, was her only sibling.
