Warframe

Warframe is a free-to-play game where players take on the role of a member of the Tenno, an ancient warrior who woke up in the future and is now involved in a space war. The game was made by Digital Extremes and first launched on PC in 2013, and later on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can play with your friends no matter what device they are using, as they added cross-platform play in 2022 and cross-platform saves in 2024.

In Warframe, you control your Tenno to complete missions using cool suits called Warframes and a variety of weapons. Some missions have levels that change every time you play, and there are large open-world areas like other online games. You can play against computer enemies or other players. The game is free to play, but you can buy things with real money if you want, although you can also earn them by playing. Warframe started out as an idea in 2000 as part of another game called Dark Sector, but it became its own game in 2012. At first, not many people played it, but now it has become a huge success with nearly 50 million players.

Warframe Gameplay

Warframe is a free-to-play action game where players control powerful bio-Tenno, initially operating a bio-mechanical combat unit called a “Warframe”. Starting with basic weapons and an AI spaceship called an “Orbiter”, players explore the Origin system. As the game progresses, players unlock direct control of “Operators”, the true Tenno protagonists, gaining unique abilities. Operators can further transform into a mechanical combat unit called a “Necramech” and engage in space combat using an “Archwing”.

The game features a variety of missions with objectives including defeating enemies, stealth, rescue, and defense scenarios. Players can play alone or with up to four other players, using parkour moves to traverse randomly generated maps. Missions earn rewards, in-game currency, and items to enhance equipment and abilities. The cooperative nature of the game extends to the player-versus-player content in “Conclave.”

Players can upgrade Warframes and weapons, customizing properties and gaining new abilities with “mods”. Equipment blueprints, building resources, and mods are earned through quests, and some rare items are available for in-game currency or microtransactions. Warframe is designed to be non-pay-to-win, allowing players to earn equipment through gameplay, while spending in-game currency or premium currency can speed up progress or unlock cosmetic items.

Warframe Development

Warframe’s origins can be traced back to Digital Extremes’ original vision for its previous game, Dark Sector. Prior to Warframe, Digital Extremes was primarily a support studio, working with Epic Games on projects like Unreal Tournament. A planned merger with Epic fell through due to complications with the Canadian government, leading Digital Extremes to go its own way.

Seeking to establish itself as a leading studio, Digital Extremes launched Dark Sector in 2000. Originally described as a fusion of Unreal Tournament action and expansive character evolution in a persistent online universe, the game went through multiple transformations over the years. Despite a 2004 re-announcement of a new direction for Dark Sector, inspired by the Metal Gear Solid series and artist Jean Giraud, finding a publisher proved difficult. Publishers suggested various changes to the game’s setting, from World War II to the superhero genre, leading to a compromise in the game’s vision.

Dark Sector was eventually released in 2008, but was a significant departure from the original concept, met with mixed reviews, and had limited financial success. Digital Extremes resumed working for hire, including contributions to BioShock, BioShock 2, Homefront, and Darkness 2, before pushing Warframe into its own unique style.
