Early life
Carson Wayne Newton was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 3, 1942, to Patrick Newton, an auto mechanic, and Evelyn Marie Newton. Newton spent most of his childhood in Roanoke, practicing piano, guitar, and steel guitar.
He was six years old when his father was serving in the United States Navy during World War II. His family moved to Newark, Ohio when he was young, and he began singing with his older brother, Jerry, at local clubs, theaters, and fairs.
Wayne Newton’s family moved to Phoenix in 1952 due to his chronic asthma, and he dropped out of North High School just before the end of his junior year to pursue his musical career.
Career
Newton and his brother formed the group Rascals in Rhythm and toured with the Grand Ole Opry and ABC-Ozark’s Jubilee; they also performed for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
He also auditioned for Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour but was unsuccessful. A Las Vegas booking agent noticed Newton performing on a local television show at the end of his junior year of high school in 1958.
