pass

Alfred Matthew “Weird Al” Yankovic (born October 23, 1959) is a veteran comedy musician, acclaimed parody artist, record producer, and actor, best known for his humorous songs that mock popular culture.

He also sang original songs stylistically modeled on the work of other performers, as well as several polka medleys of popular songs, most of which featured his signature accordion playing.

Weird Al Yankovic is one of the world’s most celebrated comedic musical performers, with more than 12 albums, a career spanning more than 20 years, and four Grammy Awards.

Al’s album sales have totaled over 13 million, making him the best-selling comedy artist in music history.

We never would have guessed that “Weird Al” Yankovic — a shy, accordion-playing teen who got his start by mailing homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento radio show hosted by Barry Hanson — would become a pop culture icon and the best-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with such classic songs and music video parodies as “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.”

Odd Orjankovic took his first accordion lesson on October 22, 1966, the day before his seventh birthday. He first encountered the accordion when a salesman came to drum up business for a music school.

As a child and teen, Weird Al Yankovic watched a lot of television, which inspired his career, and he became a fan of musicians and comedians such as Alan Sherman and Spike Jonze.

educate

Weird Al Yankovic attended Lynwood High School, graduating as valedictorian (at age 16), and then attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he studied architecture and graduated with honors.

At Cal Poly, Al hosted a radio show and earned the nickname “Weird Al.”

Profession

In high school, Oddball Al Yankovic moonlighted as an accordion teacher and occasional accordion collector. After college, Al decided that architecture wasn’t for him and worked in the mailroom for a few years before taking a clerical job at a large radio syndicate in Culver City, California.

Although “Weird Al” Yankovic had sent tapes to Dr. Demento in the past, it was at Cal Poly that he recorded his first real published work, a parody of The Knack’s hit “My Sharona” titled “My Bologna.”

Weird Orjankovic added a New York Times bestselling author title to his resume with the publication of the children’s book When I Grow Up (HarperCollins) in 2011, and followed it up two years later with Me and My New Teacher!

In 2012, Weird Al: The Book (Abrams Publishing), an illustrated hardcover book about the life and career of “Weird Al” Yankovic, was published. In 2015, Weird Al Yankovic not only became the cover boy of MAD Magazine, but also the first guest editor in the magazine’s 63-year history.
