What happened to Zuko’s mother?
Zuko’s mother, Ursa, has endured a series of heartbreaking events throughout her life in the Fire Nation. She was originally engaged to a local boy named Iken, but due to a prophecy regarding her lineage and the Avatar Roku, she was forced to marry Prince Osei. This decision kept her from true love and set the stage for further tragedy.
As Fire Princess, Ursa faced tremendous pressure and danger in the royal family. In order to save her son Zuko’s life, she made a desperate deal with Osei, agreeing to create a poison to kill Fire Lord Azulon. This act ultimately led to her expulsion from the Fire Nation, leaving behind her child and her former identity.
After leaving the Fire Nation, Ursa returns to her birthplace for refuge, where she reunites with Ikem, who now lives with a new face. In order to start over, she makes a pact with a spirit called the Mother of Faces, giving up her memories and her past life. She forms a new family with Ikem under the new name Noriko, abandoning her past, including her children, and embracing a new identity and future.
