future world
Futurama is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening and developed in collaboration with David X. Cohen. The show falls into a variety of genres, including adult animation, science fiction, comedy, and animated sitcoms. It premiered on March 28, 1999 on Fox Broadcasting Company.
The show follows the adventures of Philip J. Fry, a slacker in 1999 who was accidentally cryogenically frozen for a thousand years. He woke up on December 31, 2999, and found himself in the distant future. In the futuristic world of Futurama, Fry joins an interstellar courier company called Planet Express, where he works alongside the tough one-eyed alien Turanga Leela. The foul-mouthed, alcoholic robot Bender.
The trio embark on various interstellar adventures, encountering strange creatures, futuristic technology, and humorous dilemmas along the way. The concept for Futurama originated in the mid-1990s, when Matt Groening was working on his iconic animated series The Simpsons. Groening hired David X. Cohen to help develop the show’s storyline and characters, eventually pitching it to Fox.
Despite critical acclaim and a loyal fan base, Futurama was initially canceled by Fox after four seasons. However, it found new life through revivals on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2007. This resulted in the production of four direct-to-video films, which were released between 2007 and early 2009. Comedy Central decided to revive the show, entering into a deal with 20th Century Fox Television. The network syndicated existing series and divided the movies into 16 new half-hour episodes, effectively creating a fifth season.
The success of the reboot led to more episodes, and Comedy Central ordered an additional 26 half-hour episodes, which aired between 2010 and 2013. The show received positive reviews from critics and audiences throughout its run.
Even after its first season ended, Futurama continued to receive recognition and acclaim, winning 17 Annie Awards (9 of them) and 12 Emmy Awards (6 of them). The show was also nominated four times for the Writers Guild of America Award, winning for episodes of “Godfellas” and “Prisoners of Benda.”
In addition to its award-winning achievements, Futurama has impacted pop culture, spawning the creation of companion comic series, video games, calendars, clothing, and statues. The show’s impact was so great that in 2013 TV Guide listed it as one of the 60 greatest TV cartoons of all time.
In 2022, Hulu relaunched Futurama with a 20-episode order, marking the return of beloved characters and their future adventures. The new season premieres on July 24, 2023, allowing fans to once again enjoy the humor, wit and science fiction elements that made “Futurama” a timeless animated classic.
