Who is Charles Cullen?

Charles Cullen was born in West Orange, New Jersey, the youngest of eight children. His father, a bus driver who was 56 years old when he was born, died on September 17, 1960, when he was only seven months old. His mother was a housewife. Two of his siblings died at a young age.

At just nine years old, Charles attempted suicide by drinking chemicals from a chemistry set. It was the first of 20 suicide attempts. On December 6, 1977, his mother died in a car accident with one of his sisters at the wheel, forcing him to drop out of high school. The following April, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to the submarine corps. He served on the USS Woodrow Wilson, an attack submarine equipped with Poseidon missiles, and eventually became a petty officer third class.

Charles Cullen was arrested on December 12 after authorities had investigated him for two months. He was charged with the attempted murder of Jin Kyung Han and the murder of Pastor Florian J. Gall. Cullen pleaded no contest and not only admitted guilt to both charges, but also admitted to committing additional murders while working as a hospital employee in the past.

He admitted to killing 29 people and attempting to kill six between April and July 2004, while admitting that he could not recall all of his murders. Although some estimate his total murder count to be over 40, it is likely that he actually committed many, many more.

Charles is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, New Jersey, after entering into a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty. His murders and his undetected movement between hospitals in the United States have influenced the legal framework for hospitals in that country.

Hospitals now face heavier fines for failing to report suspicious deaths, have better legal defense options when disclosing poor employee performance, and are now required to conduct criminal background checks on all employees and register their fingerprints.

Charles Cullen’s eldest daughter, Shauna, is now Casey Cullen. Casey Cullen was born in 1988 and is currently 34 years old. She has been serving as Vice President of Global Sustainable Design and Operations – Corporate Real Estate at Barclays since May 2022.

Shauna has previously worked at Blogspot.com, Mace, Thornton Tomasetti, and Cosentini Associates. She has also worked at CL Cullen Sustainability Consulting, Solid Wood Construction, The Willow School, and Trailside Nature and Science Center.
