“Polly, my grandmother, whom we called “Nana,” came from a strange and troubled background,” Ashley added.
“My grandfather, David Oliver, turned on the gas oven and hanged himself in front of his two sons, then aged six and four, apparently because he was heartbroken that my great-grandmother had left him,” she added. “Nana’s father, Howard, saved himself and his younger brother by smashing a window.”
Ashley continued, “Howard, on the other hand, was married to an alcoholic party girl named Edie Mae Burton, who cheated on him multiple times. When Nana was nine, her father was found in the bathroom with a bullet in his head; it looked like a suicide, but everyone suspected Edie and her boyfriend.”
“Edie left shortly after the funeral, leaving Nana and her two younger siblings with her rigid, intimidating grandmother, Cora Lee Burton,” Ashley added. “Nana raised herself and her younger brother and sister among the misfit adult aunts and uncles who still lived at home, and she went to work at Cora Lee’s grandmother’s restaurant, the locally beloved Hamburger Inn.”

Pauline Ruth “Polly” Oliver Judd was born to the late Howard Waverly and Edith Mae Burton Oliver in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, United States. Naomi’s paternal grandparents were Howard Waverly Oliver (1905–1936) and Edith May Burton (1907–1977).
