Robert Sr. was born on February 17, 1930, and later died on March 27, 2008, of kidney cancer. He was born in Chicago, the fourth of five sons, and his mother died when he was young. His father remarried and the family grew up in Beth Eden Baptist Church. While attending Morgan Park High School, he took piano lessons and founded the Morgan Park Crusaders choral group.

About his mother, Frances Wooten was born on September 26, 1934 and died on September 29, 2010. She was a member of the choir group.

Robert Sr. was hired by Chicago Public Schools as a music teacher and began working in an elementary school before joining Parker High School as choir director, where he led the school to numerous awards and accolades. He was a mentor to teachers at DuSable High School until his retirement in 1994.

Additionally, Robert Sr. received a master of science degree in music education from Roosevelt University in 1968. He also received an honorary doctorate of music from Virginia College and Seminary in 1983.
