Who are Havana Rose Liu’s parents?
Havana Rose Liu was born to parents David Liu and Carley Roney. They met while attending New York University, where they were undergraduates. Havana’s father, David, told Business Insider, “Even though we didn’t spend a lot of time talking to each other, we probably saw each other every weekend for a year.” Her mother added, “Yeah, and we spent two weeks together in the Soviet Union.” [through NYU] in which we exchanged only one word.”
Years later, Havana’s parents met by chance at a party and Carley found David “pretty cute.” After seven months of dating, they were married on July 10, 1993, on the roof of the Washington building, causing Havana’s grandmother to suspect that Carley was pregnant. She was not.
One of the reasons Havana’s parents’ marriage worked so well was because they were both entrepreneurs. They understood the intensity of their work and never had the time or attention to do anything else that could ruin their marriage. On working together, Havana’s father added, “Co-founding a company with your spouse is difficult. The failure rate of startups is so high that you tie your marriage to a business that has unpredictable outcomes.”
“As a married couple in business, you experience great things that most couples will never experience,” David added. “When you close a big deal or an IPO with your spouse, it’s incredible. But some of the bad things can be incredibly dark. Deeper and darker than what most couples will ever experience.”
Their business is worth over $700 million and has over 650 employees.
