A native Californian, Alyssa has always been passionate about sports. By the time she graduated from high school, she played volleyball, basketball, and softball. While studying psychology at California State University, she played softball as a first baseman for the Sacramento State Hornets.
Alyssa first joined the San Francisco Giants in 2014 as an intern in the baseball operations department. In January 2020, she began her position as an assistant coach there.
In July 2020, Alyssa coached her first major league game in an exhibition game against the Oakland Athletics, making her the first full-time female coach in MLB history.
The Giants coach first met her now-husband, Robert Abel Nakken, when they were both students at Woodland High School. Alyssa fell in love with Robert at first sight, thanks to his great looks and athletic ability. Although at the time, no one thought there was any chance of Alyssa and Robert dating, one night Robert talked to Alyssa after a tough playoff loss and the two had a laugh, and things changed from there.
Their relationship moved too fast. While Alyssa was figuring out her life, her then-boyfriend Robert encouraged her to escape the 9-5 lifestyle and explore different walks of life. Then Rob took Alyssa on a weekend getaway to San Francisco and the rest is history.
The adorable couple got engaged in December 2020. Almost a year later, Robert and Alyssa tied the knot on November 19, 2021.
However, as of April 2022, the couple still has no children.

Robert has an associate’s degree from the University of Arizona. The 34-year-old also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of San Francisco in 2010, where he also played baseball. After graduating from USF, he began coaching at his high school. As a coach there, he built the country’s first travel baseball program.
Alyssa’s husband Robert has also coached for Travelball organizations such as NCTB and SLU.
According to his LinkedIn name, he has been working at Rhythm and Moves Inc. since September 2014.
Like his wife, Robert is also a baseball coach. However, he does not play in Major League Baseball. Perhaps that is why Robert also calls himself the second best coach in his family.
Robert coaches his own baseball team at his own baseball school, which he founded in 2019. He is the president of CRABS (Robert Abel Coaching Baseball School) where he provides the San Francisco community with top-notch baseball training for individuals, teams, and coaches.
