After four successful years, Purkiss moved to York City in 2007. Purkiss joined Oxford United in 2010 before a short loan spell at Darlington. He then moved to Hereford United in January 2012 and to Walsall in August 2012, where he stayed for three seasons. His spell at Walsall was followed by a brief spell at Port Vale in 2015, where he was made joint-captain. However, in 2017, he left Port Vale to join Swindon Town, only to return to Walsall in October 2018.
In November 2017, Ben Purkiss was elected as PFA chairman, a position he held for four years. During his tenure, he spearheaded a number of reforms within the PFA, notably the establishment of a dedicated mental health support service for players.
