Meet Benjamin Chew, Johnny Depp’s Lawyer

In his opening statement, representing Johnny Depp, Benjamin Chew said, “Some of you may recognize Mr. Depp from his roles as Edward pulled his hand. or Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean movies. For nearly 30 years, Mr. Depp has built a reputation as one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, a respected artist whose name is synonymous with box office success. Today, his name is associated with a lie, a false statement uttered by his ex-wife, defendant Amber Heard.”

“It was wrong to wrongly and unfairly cast Mr. Depp’s role as a villain, Mr. Depp, as a man who would brutally abuse women,” he added.

“This is a defamation case,” Benjamin said. “This is a case about how devastating words can be when they are false and they are uttered publicly, and under the law, a person who makes a false statement about another person can be held liable for the harm that results from that falsehood, because words matter.”

He stressed that words “can evoke strong emotions in listeners and cause irreparable damage to a person’s reputation.”

Benjamin also addressed three claims that Amber made in her post. The Washington Post in 2018. In his initial statement, he quoted, “I have spoken out against gender violence — and faced the wrath of our culture. That must change.”

He also pointed to statement number two. “Then, two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic violence, and I felt the full force of our culture’s anger at women speaking out,” he shared.

“I had a rare glimpse into how organizations protect men accused of abuse,” the third statement reads.
