A heated exchange between Charlie Redd, owner of Dragon Pizza in Somerville, Massachusetts, and Barstool founder Dave Portnoy went viral. Many people also began to question the pizza shop’s owner and the nature of its Google and Yelp reviews. Dragon Pizza in Somerville gained national attention thanks to a review from the Barstool Sports owner.

People online are talking about a video of Dave Portnoy and a pizza shop owner having a heated confrontation. On the side of the shop, the shop owner interrupted Dave while he was reviewing a pizza. The shop owner, who was wearing a Star Wars T-shirt, yelled at Dave about how he shouldn’t judge small businesses based on one bite. What happened next is now being discussed all over X (formerly Twitter).

Dave was giving his review of the pizza place outside when the owner came out and stopped next to him. He went on to express his thoughts on Dave’s one-bite review of the food served by small businesses.

Dave only gave this pizza a 6.4 out of 10 in his review. He said that the pizza was not good and the flavor was too much of a parmesan cheese. After the review, the owner of Dragon Pizza came to confront Dave. The owner expressed his dissatisfaction with the way Dave treated small businesses by criticizing them based on the poor taste of the pizza.

Later, after reading about Dave in The New York Times, he admitted that he knew who Dave was and didn’t care much about his fame. Dave then decided to respond to the situation with his usual maturity, mocking the business owner for wearing a small T-shirt and responding with a few other insults.

“Enjoy the pizza like any other customer, but I don’t appreciate you walking in and judging a business on one bite,” Charlie said.

Dave’s presence appeared to provoke the Dragon Pizza owner, who re-entered the building. He briefly left the building before returning and telling Dave to “go away” and “get out of my store.” The owner then threatened to call the police, and Dave encouraged him to do so as the two began shouting profanities at each other. Dave informed the owner that he had raised $50 million for small businesses, to which the owner responded, “You’re just talking.” Before Dave began to leave the pizza shop, the two argued for a while longer.

After the initial video was released, Dave Portnoy took to Twitter to address the Tucker Carlson incident, fueling the fire. Now that Dave has made a big deal out of it, however, Dragon Pizza is receiving a lot of criticism from its loyal followers, who are posting critical comments on their social media accounts and leaving bad reviews. Yelp has even posted a warning about new reviews on its site because of the excessive review bombing.

“This business has recently received increased public attention, which often means people are coming to the page to post their opinions on the news. While we are not taking a stance one way or the other on this incident, we have temporarily disabled posting to this page while we investigate,” Yelp’s warning said.

According to a 2018 post by Lan Coakley, Charlie founded Dragon Pizza that year with partner Keenan Langlois. Prior to founding Dragon Pizza, he owned Redd’s in Rozzie.

Charlie announced that he would be closing Redd’s at Rozzie, his seven-year-old Roslindale eatery, over the summer. He cited proposed changes to the city’s liquor license as the reason, claiming they would erase his $350,000 investment in his own license. After the restaurant officially closed in mid-July, Charlie focused on moving to the Elm Street location to open Dragon Pizza.

Dragon Pizza’s most recent FB post reads: “Thank you. This team. Our community, LOVE instead of HATE in this unbelievably ugly situation where trolls attack every aspect of us. We will persevere… I swear it.”

In November 2022, Charlie posted on his IG about Dave, writing, “I always knew David Portnoy of @barstoolsports was an asshole who reviewed pizza places by one bite as if his mouth was somehow 1000% better than the people who frequented that place.
