Elana Meyers never saw her father Eddie Meyers’ NFL Dream as motivation, but rather as something to strive for. But she certainly admired her dad, who was a social butterfly. On Father’s Day 2014, Elana wrote on her IG, “Happy Father’s Day to the man who would travel the world and come back for his daughter! Love you, Dad! #sochi“.

Eddie waited six years to play in an NFL regular season game, but it never happened.

From 1982 to 1987, Eddie served six consecutive years in the military and used his leave to attend Atlanta Falcons training camp. He played exhibition games—23 carries, 108 yards, one total touchdown, according to Atlanta Journal Constitution — but never in the regular season, because duty called. In the 1987 preseason, he injured his toe and was subsequently released. Although his dream was put on hold, he was witnessing it through Elena’s success at the Olympics.

Elana won a bronze medal in bobsled, making her the most decorated black Olympian with five medals in total. This made her history. NBC Olympics tweeted, “Elana Meyers Taylor is now the most decorated woman ever to compete in Olympic bobsled.”

The Meyers family has always encouraged their daughter to pursue sports because Elana’s parents were also athletes in their time. Elana’s father, Eddie, played college football at the United States Naval Academy. He later played in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons. Eddie’s wife, Janet, also played sports during her high school years.

A former softball player and cheerleader, Janet did not attend college and her athletic career ended in high school. But Janet saw the potential in her daughter to fulfill her dream of becoming an athlete. Seeing Elana’s passion for sports, Janet began mentoring her daughter to make sure she had everything she needed and to make sure she got into college.

Despite the dissuasion of her coaches, her mother took responsibility for making her Olympic dream come true. Janet had watched Bobsled on TV and encouraged her to take up the sport. Since Janet is white, Elana identifies as a mixed-race woman. Janet is 62 years old as of 2022.
