She’s been a comedian for a long time. Years of performing at comedy clubs and open mics have helped her perfect her craft of tickling people’s ribs.
Most of her material is based on being a Muslim woman and dealing with the stereotypes surrounding it. Speaking to Arts & Culture, Fatiha shared that if someone spoke to her on the street and she couldn’t hear them because she was wearing headphones under her hijab, people would start to assume she couldn’t speak English.
So before starting the show, Fatiha shared that she thought it was best to make it clear that she was born in the UK. “I’ve learned that I need to explain myself at the beginning of a show and tell the audience that I was born here and I’m Muslim and this is not a performance,” Fatiha said.
Fatiha also had a harder time getting noticed because no one looked like her and she had to perform in pubs (Muslims don’t drink alcohol). But years of practice refining her material made it easier. But it’s not like she hasn’t been recognized for her efforts.
The London-based comedian has won a number of awards including the Judi Love Freakin Weekend Open Mic Award, the People’s Choice Award at Quantum Leopard Comedy Tonight and won the Tesco Award at Lewis Schaffer’s Comedy Open Mic.
Ultimately, however, Fatiha does it to change things up a bit, to break down old beliefs. “It’s about spreading the message, breaking down barriers, and opening up conversations.” Fatiha puts it best.
