Baltimore boxing star Gervonta Davis is the son of Garrin Davis. Garrin and ex-wife Kenya Brown welcomed their son on November 7, 1994.

Because Garrin was constantly in and out of Gervonta’s life during his early years, he lacked the stability of growing up in difficult circumstances that most children experience. Furthermore, Garrin’s wife struggled with drug addiction, so his son received little care and nurturing.

Garrin was interviewed by New York Times about him coming in and out of Gervonta’s life because of his time in prison. Though he didn’t have a father, he did have a father figure in his life, coach Calvin Ford. “I was separated from my mother and father when I was 4 or 5 years old,” Gervonta says. Gervonta moved around a lot as a child and teenager, sometimes staying with family members and sometimes in foster care. But Ford, his coach, remained a constant in his life for many years.

“He was about 7 years old when one of his uncles took him to the gym,” Calvin Ford said.

“As a kid, when he got into trouble, no one wanted him around,” Calvin Ford said. “He just wants attention, and people always push him away. I’ve coached a lot of kids, but [Gervonta] was always there. Every time I turned around, he was there. He has become like my son.”

However, years later, Garrin certainly did. Moreover, he also has a good relationship with his parents.
