Who is Gearóid Hegarty?
Gearóid M. Hegarty (born 10 August 1994) is an Irish athlete who plays hurling and Gaelic football. He played as a right-wing forward for St. Patrick’s Club and represented the Limerick senior hurling team in inter-county competitions. Additionally, he was previously a member of the Limerick senior rugby team.

Hegarty hails from his birthplace of Limerick. His father, Ger Hegarty, was All-Ireland runners-up in 1994 with the Limerick senior hurling team.

University
Hegarty first came to prominence as a pitcher at Castleroy College. On October 19, 2011, he participated in the Hattie Cup as a forward for the first team of Castello Academy.
University
While studying at the University of Limerick, Hegarty was selected for the academy’s senior hurling team. On 24 February 2018, he won the Fitzgibbon Cup medal after UL defeated Dublin City University 2-21 2-15 in the final. Hegarty is also a regular for the University of Limerick rugby team in their Sigerson Cup matches.

Hegarty joined St Patrick’s Club as a youngster and played at all levels as a dual player at youth and underage levels. On 12 October 2014, Hegarty played as a forward when St Patrick’s were defeated by Ballylanders in the Limerick Football Championship final.

Under 21 years old
Hegarty first played for Limerick Under-21s as a Gaelic footballer. He made his debut in the Munster Championship on 19 March 2014 in a 3–15, 0–08 loss to Cork.
Hegarty became an Under-21 player in 2015 and won a Munster Championship medal after beating Clare in the final 0-22 to 0-19. Hegarty played in midfield when Limerick defeated Wexford 0-26 to 1-07 in the All-Ireland final on 12 September 2015.

Hegarty’s journey into adulthood began as a member of the Limerick senior football team. He made his National Football League debut on February 9, 2014, helping the team defeat Longford 2-11, 0-11. He then made his first Championship start in the Munster Championship, losing 2-14 to 1-11 to Tipperary.
In 2016, Hegarty initially played in the early rounds of the National Football League before switching to Limerick Senior Hockey. He made his debut on 13 March 2016, coming on as a half-time substitute for Seánie O’Brien in a 6–29 to 1–12 win over Laois at the Gaelic Stadium. In the Championship, he made his debut against Tipperary, with Limerick losing 3-12 to 1-16.
By 2017, Hegarty committed himself to Limerick senior hurling and left rugby as the practice of accommodating double players had ended.
Hegarty’s crowning moment came on 19 August 2018, when he played as a right-wing forward in a thrilling 3-16 to 2-18 final win over Galway to give Limerick their first All-Ireland in 45 years. The champion made a huge contribution. His outstanding performance earned him a nomination for the All-Star Award that season.
Continuing his success, Hegarty was selected as a right-wing forward in Limerick’s National League Final against Watford on 31 March 2019 at Croke Park. He played a vital role in ensuring the team won 1-24 to 0-19, taking three points in the match and receiving a winners’ medal. On 30 June 2019, he added a Munster Championship medal to his honours, beating Tipperary 2-26 to 2-14 in the Limerick final. He contributed three points as a right-wing forward.
