coronation street
Coronation Street is a popular British television soap opera produced by Granada Television and broadcast on ITV since 9 December 1960. The show follows the lives of the residents of a cobblestone terraced street in the fictional town of Weatherfield, based in Salford, England.
Initially, the show aired twice a week, but moved to six times a week in 2017. The idea for the show was conceived by screenwriter Tony Warren. Although Warren’s initial proposal was rejected by network founder Sidney Bernstein, producer Harry Elton convinced him to produce a 13-episode pilot. Over the years, Coronation Street has become an integral part of British culture.
Production of Coronation Street is now run by Granada’s successor ITV Studios and is filmed at MediaCityUK. The show airs in all ITV territories and has received international recognition. In 2010, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Coronation Street was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest-running television soap opera.
Although the show was initially influenced by kitchen sink realism, the show became known for its combination of depictions of working-class communities, relatable characters, and light-hearted humor. On average, the show draws about 5 million viewers per episode.

Who is leaving Coronation Street?
In an upcoming storyline, Coronation Street hitmaker Paul Foreman will face a tragic fate as he is diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and ultimately dies. The soap is working closely with the MND Association to chart the impact of the diagnosis on Paul and his loved ones as the disease progresses.
Motor neuron disease is a rapidly progressive and ultimately fatal disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, specifically targeting the nerves responsible for controlling movement. As a result, the muscles gradually lose function, often resulting in sensory impairments such as sight, sound, and sensation.
Actor Peter Ash, who plays Paul Foreman, expressed his gratitude to the MND Association for their assistance and support in preparing this storyline. Paul’s character will be blindsided by the diagnosis, and he decides to keep it a secret from family and friends as he deals with the news.
Actors feel a significant sense of responsibility when playing a character who deals with real-life issues or medical conditions. The production team acknowledges that some viewers may be experiencing MND firsthand, making it even more important that the storyline is approached with sensitivity and awareness of its real-life impact.
“Awareness and education are really important. Even in the short time I’ve been involved in this storyline, I’ve learned a lot. We hope Paul’s journey will make people more aware of the symptoms of MND and what it’s like to live with MND.”
