Rabiu Kwankwaso’s journey in Kano State government began in 1975 when he joined the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Authority. Over the years, he held various roles within the agency, eventually becoming chief water engineer. In 1999, he won the governorship of Kano State, serving his first term until 2003. However, his tenure was marked by many controversies, facing opposition from various factions and sided with Yoruba President Olusegun Obasanjo. Despite his efforts, he lost the 2003 election to his opponent, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.
In 2022, Kwankwasco took a major step by leaving the PDP and joining the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP). He ran and won the presidential primary election held in Abuja later that year. However, in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, Kwankwasco and his running mate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa, won fourth place with nearly 1.5 million votes. Before the general election, Kwankwaso was invited along with other candidates to the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, UK, to discuss his vision for Nigeria.
