Richie’s English Career

University

While attending Mary Immaculate College, English was selected as a member of the college’s senior hurling team. In his second season, he had the honor of serving as team captain. On 27 February 2016 he achieved a major milestone by winning a Fitzgibbon Cup medal as Mary I defeated University of Limerick 1-30 to 3-22 to claim their first title. In 2017, when Mary I defended their title, English continued his success and played at full-back in a 3-24 to 1-19 victory over Carlow Institute of Technology.

club

From an early age, English was a member of the Doon Club, active in all grades of youth and minors. He won titles in the under-12, under-14 and under-15 categories. As a member of the club’s squad, he won back-to-back championship medals in 2012 and 2013, beating Patrickswell and Napiase respectively. In 2012, English represented the club in the senior championship for the first time.

English’s journey with Limerick began in the minor leagues in 2012, a season that ended with a defeat to Clare in the Munster Championship semi-finals. The following year, he captained the minor team and tasted victory on 23 July 2013, defeating Watford 1-20 to 4-08 in Limerick to win the title for the first time in 29 years. During the Munster Championship, he played as right cornerback.

In 2014, English joined the Limerick Under-21 Hockey Team. In his second season he won a Munster Championship medal in a hard-fought final against Clare, 0-22 to 0-19. Later, on 12 September 2015, English played at full-back when Limerick defeated Wexford in the All-Ireland final. He was subsequently named the Bord Gáis Energy Player of the Year for his performances.

Advanced

English joined the Limerick senior hurling team in January 2014, entering the senior team. He made his senior debut as left corner-back on 13 February 2016 in a National League win over Wexford. In the Championship, he made his first start in the Munster Championship semi-finals, losing 3–11 to 1–16 to Tipperary.

A major highlight of English’s senior career came on 19 August 2018 when he played at left corner-back in Limerick’s historic All-Ireland Championship win of 3-16 to 2-18. The score beat Galway. Following this achievement, he was honored to be named to the Sunday Game Team of the Year and received the All-Star award for the season.

On 31 March 2019, English played at left cornerback in the Limerick National League Final at Croke Park, helping the team win 1–24 to 0–19 and receive a winners’ medal. However, this victory was accompanied by sadness as his father, Paddy English, passed away after a long illness. On 30 June 2019, he won a Munster Championship medal in the same position, helping Limerick beat Tipperary 2-26, 2-14 in the final. His outstanding performance earned him his second All-Star Award nomination that year.

Unfortunately, his season was cut short on February 23, 2020, as he suffered a cross injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the year.
