Roger Ordish on Netflix’s Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story
Roger Ordish is the producer of Jim will fix it. for 19 years. He told SussexWorld, “If I could write Jim’ll Fix It myself, I would ask to appear in a musical.” For 19 years, he warned his staff on the show that Jimmy should not be left alone with children.
He said the rule was not based on fear that “something terrible” might happen to the children. But the rule was that children should always be supervised and never think that Jimmy was a pedophile.
Roger also said Jimmy’s presence could be “offensive” and “intimidating” to some young people. In her review, Dame Janet described Roger as honest and decent. She was satisfied he had no knowledge of any of Jimmy’s offending. Former BBC DJ Tony Blackburn said he had been offered a leave of absence before being sacked by the company, which found he had failed to co-operate fully with a lengthy investigation into Jimmy’s sexual assault at the BBC.
Roger testified at Dame Janet Smith’s inquiry, which found the BBC missed opportunities to stop Savile attacking children and identified 72 victims, including eight who were raped.
Roger said: “I remember saying he shouldn’t be left alone with children, but that applies to any presenter because the rule is that young people should always have a guardian.” Guardian“Not because I was afraid he would do something terrible to the child, but I think his presence was frightening to some children. I think it was, terrifying.
“[He was] creepy, yes, but I never thought there was any kind of paedophilia going on. If someone came to me and said a particular thing had happened, a complaint about Jimmy Savile’s behaviour, I would immediately do something about it.”
Roger said he invited the host to stay at his home, and Jimmy slept in the room next to his 14-year-old daughter’s bedroom. “It wasn’t a blind eye,” he said. He described Jimmy, who died in 2011, as an enigmatic person who built barriers around himself. “I probably knew him as well as anyone but didn’t know him very well because he was a very private person,” he said.
“He spent his whole life hiding things and probably enjoyed hiding them. But that’s in retrospect. I always found his behaviour quite strange, but you don’t think about it, you don’t say: ‘Was Jimmy Savile a drug dealer? Was Jimmy Savile a paedophile?’ You just think: ‘That’s Jimmy Savile.’”
BBC producer said when the idea Jim will fix it. was brought to the BBC, Roger met with his boss, Bill Cotton, and said he thought the company should find another presenter. “It had nothing to do with Jimmy Savile’s morals, it had to do with his ability to communicate with young people,” he said. “He had openly said: ‘I hate children.’”
The producer said he could not talk about his time at the BBC without feeling ashamed. “It was nothing compared to the terrible things that happened to the victims, but when I retired people would say: ‘What did you do?’.
“I would say: ‘I’m a BBC producer… Jim’ll Fix It, I did it for 20 years, and you used to get a great response. Now it’s something I can’t mention, you’re embarrassed by it.’
