Sharon Smith is extremely worried! Her husband, Mike Leach, is currently in a “critical” condition in hospital.
So while we wait for the real miracle to happen, let’s learn all about Mike Leach’s wife in this Sharon Smith Biography.
Meet Sharon Smith, Mike Leach’s wife
Sharon Smith first met Mike Leach while they were both attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It appears that Sharon’s sister was married to one of Mike’s former roommates, and the two became acquainted afterward.
Yes, they were friends for a while before they got engaged.
Recalling the old days, Mike said he used to go to Sharon’s house in the King Henry Apartments to watch TV with her and her roommates. Sharon’s favorite show back then was MASH while Mike preferred Gunsmoke. Joking about the matter, Mike added, “It was almost blasphemous to anything American and I tried to get them back on track, and I think I succeeded. Sharon was a pretty tough case, so I had to marry her where I could keep an eye on her a lot more often.”
For their first date, Mike took Sharon to the A&W in Provo after a football game. And surprisingly, he pulled out a 2-for-1 coupon book and told her “here’s the menu.” Well, despite being a risky move, the gamble clearly paid off.
Sharon even joked that their first date wasn’t planned and only happened because Mike was hungry. “He probably had a two-for-one coupon and I was the one who got it free,” she explained.
Back in the mid-80s, the couple later tied the knot in a ceremony officiated by Sharon. Recalling memories of the planning process, Mike joked that “women lose their minds” when it comes to wedding planning and that the groom couldn’t come up with “the right answer” to anything. He even advised the groom to stay out of the planning process and “stay as far away from danger as possible.”

Sharon Smith was a full-time administrative assistant and legal secretary to Pepperdine’s athletic director for about 14 years. In 1996, she quit to become a stay-at-home mom after Mike was offered the offensive coordinator job at the University of Kentucky.
It was certainly a difficult time for them back then — Mike graduated from Pepperdine Law School in 1986 but decided to give up his law career to pursue his dream of becoming a college football coach.
But now, Mike is a two-time national coach of the year, a three-time Power 5 conference coach of the year, and the mastermind behind the NCAA record-setting “Air Raid” offense. He was even named Mississippi State’s 34th football coach on January 9, 2020.
In more than two decades of head coaching experience, Mike compiled a 150-103 (.593) record, led his teams to 18 bowl games, produced seven seasons with at least nine wins, won two bowl titles, became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history, and set school records for bowl appearances at both Texas Tech and Washington State.
Fun Fact: Mike didn’t change careers because he was bad at law. In fact, he graduated in the top third of his class with a Juris Doctor from Pepperdine University.
